Apparently, I used the phrase "out of spoons" when talking to my mother. Apparently, she wasn't aware of the metaphorical use. I just got these in the mail.

Omg that’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen

Imagine your ability to handle stimulus throughout your day/week/etc is represented by a stack of spoons. Each thing you deal with takes a certain number and/or size of spoon/s. Some folks have more, some have less. Being "out" means you might could deal with stuff....but you're using forks now.💛
Avatar
And sometimes using forks means being a little stabby.

And when you get down to knives, chances are you'll injure yourself.

I figured tongs would be ADHD. 😹💛 -clack clack- 👀🦀

I like this progression-a spoons addendum I’m on 12lb sledgehammer I can try to do it but it’s getting wrecked

I don't even have spoons anymore, I'm just permanently on "oven mitts". I don't know how to react to things sometimes, so I wear mitts for everything. Little clumsy, but I don't want to hurt anyone (exceptions may apply).

Thanks, never heard it either. Sounds a bit like "too many irons in the fire", which is a thing my family says.

Your family come with a heritage of smithing? (That's an awesome idiom BTW) You genuinely don't have to answer, but your last name Smith? 😸

Ha! No not at all. TBH I bet my dad or someone picked it up from watching cowboy movies or TV as a kid or something like that.

A quick google shows this article (sources @ bottom of post) stating it originated in the 1500s so at the very least your idiom has the privilege of claiming "older sibling rights". www.idioms.online/too-many-iro... Too many spoons in the fire. (I love malaphors 😹💛)

It comes from an anecdote where a person with chronic pain tried to explain their problems to a healthy friend, and it happened to take place in a diner. It just means 'my energy is limited and everything takes energy'. It could have been gas in the tank, too, but this explanation caught on.

That’s both hilarious and heart warming

Okay, that's adorable

As a mother this is exactly what I would do. Daughter mentioned leaving her phone charger at a friend’s. Next day I sent her 3. Mother’s gonna mother!

A+ mother action Bonus points if she sent you the tracking info and followed up on the day of delivery

protect your mom at all costs. she has my sword.

Isn't it ironic, It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.

She probably knows the metaphorical meaning, but is a bit of a joker. 🤭

I haven't decided whether or not I'm going to tell/ask her or how. The message that came with the spoons was played entirely straight up. It does happen to be the case that someone relatively recently moved out and I could very well actually have needed real spoons.
Avatar
It's doubly awesome then! And every time you use one it'll be a reminder that your mom has your back.
Avatar
I know I've never heard it before. Haven't a clue what it means.
Avatar
Used by a subset of chronic illness folks. See the wikipedia entry for Spoon Theory. Essentially spoons are a metaphor for your physical/mental energy. Folks talk about being out of spoons or rationing their spoons.
Avatar
Thanks Doc, I will look it up. I have a feeling it's relevant to my life in ways I didn't know before today.

I don’t know your mother, but I love her.

This is so sweet! I happened to explain spoon theory to the mom of a kid my kid was in school with. Her kid was going through some serious stuff. She found the spoons idea really illuminating. She gave me a big assortment of spoons for Christmas. I still use them!

Thank your mum for me - I needed a good laugh!

I love that she apparently labelled the bags “Spoons”. Now you can tell what’s in the bags. So considerate of her! 🥰

now you have plenty of spoons to restock on spoons be having soups.
Avatar
This leads me to assume you have at some point used "Im out of spoons" as a reason for not being up to some task, and she just accepted your lack of silverware as valid reason to be unable to perform said task and Im here for that

An entirely sincere "aw, bless her heart".
