Workin’ up a fever in a one-horse town. Somerville-based garage-punk-pub-rock on a Rum Bar Records. The music stuff is the band’s; the politics, academic crotchets, and low-effort posts are mine.

I wonder if the folks in the DNC who pushed for an early debate did so because they wanted this out early. But I may be attributing too much competence.

RIP Robert Towne, this is still one of the most chilling summaries of the nature of greed I’ve ever encountered in fiction

The electoral problem has become, as the IRA gloated to Thatcher, that the GOP only needs to get lucky once and the Democrats need to be lucky forever. Either they’re going to do something about the court - now, not eventually - or we will simply play iterations of this game until the GOP wins.
I want everyone to think about what Trump will do with explicit absolute immunity from prosecution and the full power of the presidency of the United States of America those are the stakes in November, full stop

This is one of the most dystopian signs I've ever seen. Republicans are quickly turning this country into an unrecognizable freakshow.

Spending the week with MAGA family and I gotta say: FOX NEWS is so good at the shitty stuff it does—more refined, subtle, and insidious without losing its power as a sledgehammer.

I had always hoped that to end democracy a power-hungry monster would have to accomplish 1 actual thing first, but I guess borrowing beyond your means and being racist are more in line with American values

I keep coming back to "all this for literally Donald Trump," but it fits. There's not some more competent aspiring autocrat who'd somehow "earn" or "win" this. This is how it has always gone: feckless/evil elites attaching themselves to the sociopath they believe will get them where they want to go.

Thanks for mentioning that. I found both that article, and the one the OP was referring to. No one should listen to the NYT or Douchehat.

Frankly, it could be argued that overturning Chevron is worse than Roe, because with virtually no regulations left, you can be freely poisoned by corporate America.

it's fucked up that in the united states there are so many jobs that require tips to make a living wage. like baristas and supreme court justices

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.
I don’t recall the NYT calling for Trump to step down after being convicted of 34 counts of fraud and being called by a judge at his civil trial a rapist in the common person sense

Make no mistake, Clarence Thomas SOLD his vote on the Chevron doctrine. He was strongly in favor of it, even authoring a decision reinforcing it in 2005. Then he got $4 million in gifts from corporate interests who wanted Chevron gone. And now Thomas did a 180 to kill it.
