On an even lower stakes subject, I see this all the time in the discourse about whether it matters that historical fiction on film & TV is “inaccurate”. This is often based on an assumption that many people out there are so dim that they are unable to distinguish between The Crown and a documentary.

So much “voters” discourse is “first, assume the existence of someone much less intelligent than yourself and everyone taking part in this discussion”. A much lower stakes version playing out with prison reform in the UK, where there’s an imagined, incredibly thick bloc of swing voters.
