Yeah, this. And too many of them are under the delusion that the GOP, CNN, and NYT wouldn’t switch to baseless attacks on Harris without skipping a beat.
what you want isn’t Nominee Harris. it’s a comfortable lead over Trump. the evidence that switching to Harris will produce that comfortable lead is nonexistent. so reassure me that you’re not going to continue filling your drawers if you get what you say you want.

Hmm. Goobers like WF Buckley and Robert Novak were considered Very Serious People long before cable news. Seems like the NYC/DC cocktail party circuit and Ivy League secret societies also have a lot to answer for here.
Avatar
Who said they’re unrelated? What they aren’t is an independent variable. To get those votes, how many do they lose from other constituencies? If you offered Dems an opportunity to increase their vote share vs. 2020 with a slightly different coalition, like Labour did, what’s the smart move?
Avatar
The major shift in the polls vs. final result was in favor of Farage and Reform. How does a big shift toward a far-right party support your hypothesis that Muslim and/or pro-Palestine voters account for the late move from earlier polls?
Avatar
I’m not sure what that 10% number refers to since the LibDems alone got over 12%, but the idea the Dems should be scared because Labour increased their vote share on the way to a historic landslide victory seems like motivated reasoning not rooted in data.
Avatar
Turnout was down from 2019 across the board. Attributing that to a single issue would be dishonest without strong evidence. The available UK election data simply does not support your claim.

Labour’s vote share was up vs. the prior election.

This is particularly important to understand because Trumpist authoritarianism is the descendent of Jim Crow far more than say Hitler or Pinochet or Orban, and it's going to look a lot more like 1930s Mississippi than 1930s Berlin.
For most of its history, America hasn’t been a democracy, by any meaningful definition of the term! This isn’t some It Can’t Happen Here shit, in a way, it’s already happened. It just may not have directly affected you.

Not universally true. Oxnard sounds like a war zone from early June until mid July, and not just small-arms grade. Yesterday afternoon and evening sounded like heavy artillery combat for 8-12 hours.
Avatar
Excepting possibly Blue Dogs who prioritize donor class issues I don’t think that’s true. Very few Dems are willing to cross organized constituencies that reliably show up and vote blue.
Avatar
Just the opposite. The gun nuts get their way because they show up every time and will ensure their preferred candidate gets the nod in every low turnout primary or off-year special election. Name a single election they ever sat out.
Avatar
You’re almost correct. Politicians do notice who shows up to vote. And they prioritize the issues of the groups that reliably show up. They largely ignore the groups that don’t.
Avatar
This may not age well, but tonight feels more like a ceiling than a floor for Farage. He and his Putin-snuggling brownshirts are a known quantity, not some fresh new thing. With the epic collapse of the Tories, I think anyone who didn’t vote for them this time likely never will
Avatar
Mixed feelings here. On the positive side, parliamentary systems give the racist authoritarians a way to sort themselves out separately in a way they can be blocked from power, unlike in the US. On the other, I fear where all this is headed.

Seriously, WTF is this cartoon villain shit? Fed indictment about to drop?

The States Project is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options for your campaign donations. Even beyond it, though, state legislatures deserve your attention. Next time you're tempted to send money to whoever's going to lose to MTG, send it instead to a contested state leg seat.
Looking for one person to join me today in donating to flipping both statehouses in Arizona to create a new trifecta for democracy. This is the smartest political donation we can make this year.

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.

Would that be Oregon Governor Nick Kristof? The poor man’s Bob Shrum? But yes, it isn’t the left that’s wetting their diapers this time, it’s the weak centrist establishment types who’ve been in a fetal crouch since the Reagan era.

I’m all in favor of meeting people where they are, but this dynamic annoys the hell out of me. No, I won’t perform melodramatic outrage for you to accept that I agree with you.
Me: This is bad Agitated People: You’re not sufficiently upset about it, you’re not saying explicitly enough how bad it is to meet my emotional needs, I am going to stand here and soil myself while maintaining eye contact until you are as emotive as I am

Fuck all your doomposting. No one who has ever accomplished anything did it by giving up and whining that there was nothing to do, the bad guys won and we are all doomed. Defeatism is death.

“Can’t win?” Based on a debate that will move exactly zero votes in November? Huge over-reaction that will not age well.
Avatar
Oh, fuck off. This is a colossally bad take that would hand the White House to Trump.

I remember this. As a kid I also didn’t realize for a long time that the Chevette and the Chevelle were different cars, and would get confused whenever someone expressed a desire for a Chevelle.
