This is what's angering me the most about it. A) This is a self-inflicted wound that B) will be made much worse when the inevitable downturn or some other disaster strikes. At a time when we could be shoring up the system for generations, one person has decided to make that impossible.

Great All-American convo w one of my grade schooler’s today. GS: So we had a lock-down drill today. What’s the point? Ooooh, hiding in the corner. How does that block a bullet? Me: … [no answer, bc no answer] GS: At least let me have a metal water bottle, so I can hit him if he comes in.

New post up: a brief explainer on California's Realignment Law. CA has driven US prison declines--it's responsible for ~1/3 of the national drop in the states--but the law that drove things, Realignment, gets far too little attention. If you're unfamiliar w it, this will at least get you started.
Realignment: The Transformative (and Complicated) Reform No One Talks Aboutjohnfpfaff.com California's 2011 Realignment law was one of the more transformative reform laws of the current reform era, but it gets almost no attention. This explainer hopes to start to help fix that.

This reminds me of Larry Hogan canceling the Red Line in Baltimore right after getting elected governor. Like 10 years later we’re back to trying to build the Red Line that would be operational by now. We can NOT beat this much power in a single politician to derail years of public investment.

I called my congressman and expressed that I want a change in House leadership. I also called Jeffries office and let them know how stupid his actions were. Not much help, I’m sure, but if every Democrat in Congress gets some calls saying “Not Hakeem Jeffries” for leadership, maybe it matters.
Do it! And if you don't live in NYC and are looking for ways to help, calling Schumer and Jeffries is a great idea. As party leaders with immense power, what they do or don't do in New York has massive implications for transit and climate policy across the country.

Right now reporters are saying there aren't enough votes in the NYS Senate to pass this IOU nonsense. Keep calling your reps and tell them to stick with congestion pricing. Your calls are making a difference!
Keep calling your state reps and the Senate and Assembly leaders. If this passes any hope of congestion pricing happening dies. @transalt.org has links that will help you find your state reps: transalt.org/action

As always what strikes me in these cases is that the sheer *value for money* of political bribery is just incredible.

I thought that maybe Microsoft thought through the security implications here, but it's clear that either they did and decided it didn't matter, or didn't at all. I can't decide which is worse, but I will not be allowing any Copilot+ PCs in my enterprise either way.

The DoD has recognized pride month every year since 2012, following the repeal of DADT. Not a new policy; the "backlash" is a shift in how conservative media outlets report on the military, which *is* new. The case is a great data point in the debate over "politicization" and the military. (🧵)

12 regular people doing their level best. I don’t ever want to know their names. They’ve earned a lifetime of safety and privacy.
The only people who've ever held Trump meaningfully accountable over the last nine years have been ordinary Americans and they've spent that entire time being lectured to and berated by elites who've failed to do anything.

Trump promising to deprive citizens of their citizenship. Please don’t dismiss this with “Well, he can’t do that.” It would *probably* be invalidated by the courts but only after weeks, months, or years of ruining these citizens’ lives.
this is one of his most insidious proposals: On the first day of his second term, the campaign has let it be known, Trump will sign an executive order “to withhold passports, Social Security numbers and other government benefits from children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States.”
Opinion | Trump’s Taste for Tyranny Finds a Targetwww.nytimes.com Once you start talk about immigrants “poisoning the blood of our country,” what comes next?

Americans deserve high quality, rigorous, accurate and careful historical education, but outside a handful of elite private institutions, the system that produces that is being dismantled out of a mix of political malice and short-sighted, self-interested mismanagement. 5/
