bouie is literally the only person on the NYT board who is behaving and responding to the debate like a professional that has followed and covered a presidential election. i mean that seriously, i'm not being snarky.
if you actually get *paid* to write about politics for a living, screaming that the nominee has to drop out after one bad debate *in june* (and one in which the challenger did not do well, either), you are unqualified for your job and your salary
Avatar
He had freaks melting down in his replies simply from asking “why wouldn’t it be Kamala then?”
Avatar
Because she polls even worse than Biden. Do you want to win or be politically correct?
Avatar
Biden steps down. Harris is muscled aside in favor of Andy Beshear. Jim Clyburn and other high ranking blacl Democrats says “wait a sec, why are we elevating Harris?” what happens next?
Avatar
“buh you just love identity politics” doesn’t get around the fact that parties are coalitions, Harris has a real and influential constituency, and ignoring it could prove a problem.
Avatar
(also, no real evidence that a non-Harris Democrat would not also be saddled by the unpopularity of the Biden administration)
Avatar
right, like, the natural question to this hypothetical replacement candidate is "what would you, as president, do differently than the biden administration has done", and i doubt you find anyone willing to discuss that
Avatar
people want to believe that you can just swap out biden no harm no foul, but there is nothing about this system as constituted that allows that. but rather than grapple with this, the response is basically to scream “nuh uh”
Avatar
THANK you, this bizarre fantasy stuff is so dumb and so pointless
Avatar
I mean, I don't like Harris at all, but I don't see how we replace her and win. I think we are stuck with Biden unless he chooses to drop out, and we only have her as a replacement. Also, it was dumb to have the convention after ballot deadlines.
Avatar
This year’s conventions are no later than usual.
Avatar
Why didn't this crowd start the dump biden movement in jan 2023 when there were reasonable scenarios
Avatar
My humble opinion is that Biden beat trump. No one else has yet.
Avatar
Technically Romney did in the 2012 primaries.
Avatar
Let's face it, Obama beat him in the 2012 primaries. Literally and figuratively laughed him out of the race.
Avatar
And then he just came back as more of a bastard the next round. And the fact that the DNC seemed unprepared for him to do just that THIS time is just baffling.

Avatar
Trump ran in 2012 largely on a birther platform before dropping out making Romney the GOP nom.
Avatar
He never ran in 2012, he only slung around the birther BS. He announced in May 2011 that he wouldn't seek the nomination, well before any of the GOP primaries. It took until May 2012 for Romney to beat Newt, Ryan, and Santorum. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Re...

Because they're all part of the effort to get TFG back in. I'm all-in on Occam's Razor this year. Seven dimension chess doesn't exist and the most obvious reason is the most likely. There's no scenario where that's not the outcome, so that's what they want.
Avatar
One of this crowd's key tactics is to deliberately and shamelessly stall during any period in which action is possible. Then the moment it's effectively too late to do anything, they put on a sad wide-eyed expression and say there are just no changes they can make.
Avatar
I think we all know the answer to that — these are all, every last one of them, people who don't care about solutions or results whatsoever, they just want to loudly hate whatever Democrat is in power because clinging to Magical Fantasy Democrat who solves all their problems is easier.
Avatar
And the second Magical Fantasy Democrat turns out to be a real person who actually wants to do the work, they immediately turn on that person. (Look at how quickly AOC fell out of favor with the Bernie Bro crowd)
Avatar
Because none of the other logical picks for the nomination wanted to run
Avatar
Arguably not part of ''this crowd", but @perrybaconjr.bsky.social did float the idea before then. bsky.app/profile/perr... Probably a coincidence, but he also used to work for Nate Silver, who came later to the idea but has since been obsessed with it.
Ha. Yes. I have received quite a few, "Maybe you were right" messages in the last 24 hours. But I would rather not be right about this! I wish Biden had been better. Alas. But I have been saying this since January 2022. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
Opinion | If Biden doesn’t run, Democrats have plenty of strong candidates for 2024www.washingtonpost.com One of them, of course, is Kamala Harris. But she's not the only one, and that's okay.
Avatar
"Its too early to call the 24 election, we cant give up the incumbent advantage! (even though we just lost the House in the Midterms) your just being a spoiler, youre actually a Trump Supporter!"
Avatar
Because of the Democrat’s slavish devotion to norms, the only way to ditch Biden was, and is, to get him to drop out. Democratic leaders didn’t want to make him do that, now it is obvious they need to (but they probably still won’t).
Avatar
Ok, but he’s also declined a lot in the past 18 mos.
Avatar
Not that he was exactly freewheelin’ Onion Biden back in 2023. But to me it’s this frog-boiling thing where every couple of weeks he’s just a -little bit- more spaced out. I bet that if you’re too close to it, you can miss it until something forces you to see him like a normal person would.

The whole thing is no different than an improbable trade deal someone calling into sports radio would think up
Avatar
what if we traded lebron james for nicola jokic, i mean, we're not going to talk to the league or the lakers or the nuggets about it, but just asking
Avatar
that's how this works, right
Avatar
Someone posted a similar take last night, and their replies and yours are literally what cspan sounded like after the debate (I can’t stand cable news).
Avatar
I said in an argument last night that it’s like saying we should convert the US grid to solar (a pretty good idea) by shutting down all coal plants next month (a disaster that wouldn’t even get you to your goal)
Avatar
I have conversations like this about health care. Any attempt to just go straight to single-payer would be a disaster. Every person employed in health care or insurance would have to renegotiate their contracts all at once, as would the majority of the insured, as would a fuckton of others.
Avatar
THANK YOU!!! I have done extensive work in healthcare and energy policy and I feel this in my soul! It’s a slogan, not a plan! Please stop shouting it at me. Medicare is coinsurance, without getting into Parts C & D…start with Medicaid with higher reimbursements & lower barriers blearghhhbbbb!
Avatar
They don't get that transitioning our system is MUCH more difficult than building a proper system from the start.
Avatar
Sports fandom for a team with like a flailing QB was immediately what came to mind when the opinions started coming in.
Avatar
Have you been reading Nate Silver?
Avatar
Avatar
Whenever his dipshit takes show up I just imagine him in a shirt that says "I was right that one time", all sweaty, forcing his way into a random conversation. Just barging in and saying shit like "It's obvious that politics and sports are similar systems. Also, have you read my lab leak stuff?"
Avatar
If the QB’s leg has healed and he’s been working out, there’s no reason to replace his antivaxx ass unless the other guy is better. Regardless, football is different from electoral politics, and you wouldn’t suggest replacing him with a wide receiver right before the game.
Avatar
Nate’s analogy might make sense if he and others were saying put in the backup (Harris) instead they are suggesting holding tryouts during the game. Just smooth brain city.
Avatar
it's just fantasy football campaign edition, like, none of the arguments i have read (save yours) are grappling with any of the actual realities of process or the parties involved who would have to be convinced or the timeline in which it would have to happen
Avatar
Buncha freaks malding and screeching at anyone not similarly pulling their hair out. It’s fucking pathetic, honestly.
Avatar
This motherfucker has NO idea what he’s talking about but damn if he isn’t trying to get everyone to panic with him. It’s like when you try to save a drowning victim and the freak out and try to drown you too.
They didn’t require Biden to debate. They should have invited him and made him decline. By not asking he debate, the put their finger on the scale. More importantly they KNEW this was his mental state and hid it from us until we were stuck with him.
Avatar
Dafuq?! I voted for Biden in the primary, and I had no desire to see him debate, uhhhhhhhhh, Dean, uh, what his name, the backbencher from Illinois, I want to say? Dean Phillips. It’s like the North Dakota guy, I don’t care enough to learn his name or what he looks like. Mad I did.
Avatar
I’m happy with the job Biden is doing. He’s been extraordinarily effective and much more progressive than I would have expected. In 2008 and 2020, I was like, him? Now I’m Biden all the way.
Avatar
Replacing him is a ridiculous fantasy peddled by unserious people.
Avatar
What no one has mentioned is Ohio GOP tried to block Biden from even being on the ballot & it took the governor intervention to make sure he would be on (despite following all the rules) You just going to replace him & expect no GOP shenanigans Whomever replaces him might not even be on all ballots
Avatar
Unless he dies this is the candidate — sorry folks Going to be Biden Harris no matter what
Avatar
And even then, he’ll probably be the candidate on the ballot in the majority of states, so the person running will have to run the messaging in those states to vote for Biden.
Avatar
Seriously. Especially if there's a genuine risk of a floor fight, because then those states can honestly say "we have no idea what's going to happen in August" bsky.app/profile/cyne...
If this really was "the cold messed him up", then it's "take some time to recover, and plan to campaign through a tough schedule" If that's not the issue...then it's time to double-check ballot access laws and how to get the nomination to Harris.
Avatar
Do they seriously believe that instead of a Biden surrogate who appeals to a key demographic like James Clyburn or Jasmine Crockett or Jamie Harrison or a Muslim celebrity, they’re going to have crazy-eyed hipster in keffiyeh stand up to nominate Gretchen Whitmer or Gavin Newsom or whoever? JFC.
Avatar
The Underpants Gnomes had a better theory of the case than anyone going "replace Biden and Harris."
Avatar
There is a 0.00‰ possibility of a floor fight. The delegates were already elected, and they’re all pledged to vote for Biden/Harris in the first round. Clyburn or whoever will nominate them, literally every delegate will stand up, and they will be the nominee. The End. Veep was pretty accurate.

"what if we did a thing that has literally never been done in our nation's history? that should be straightforward." wtf are people talking about?
