*Even if* they had serious and legitimate problems with this program (reader: they do not), opting out at cost of direct and immediate harm to citizens in need to make some political point is despicable.
The governors of a dozen Republican-led states — AL, AK, FL, GA, IA, MS, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, WY — opted out of a new federal food assistance program, leaving about 9.5 million students without the aid this summer

Long election campaigns also put the emphasis, over and over again, ON THE ELECTION rather than on governing: like voting is all we as citizens have to do; like winning is the most important quality in a candidate. GOVERNING. The thing is GOVERNING. Elections should be a means of accountability+
Long elections waste immense amounts of money. they harass potential voters into apathy. They play into the horse-race, scandal-fed view of politics that feeds deeply unserious media coverage. They NOT INCIDENTALLY make it difficult/impossible for campaigns to deal with last-minute surprises.

This just in: f*ck the US two-party system.
folks gonna miss this from just the headline, but someone should point it out: the lack of live fact-checking by the moderators *was part of the agreement* by the campaigns. It's not just that CNN /didn't/ live fact check it. It's that they /weren't allowed to/.

This is a great-if-depressing thread. I was infuriated to learn my alma mater had used #3 on my favorite prof, in a subdiscipline that the then dept. chair thought "wasn't real ". (karmic payback: it wasn't long before said subdiscipline was getting its own well-funded departments.)
Some examples of academic gatekeeping: 1) telling someone their research “doesn’t count” 2) excluding adjuncts/staff from professional development or funding 3) drawing arbitrary disciplinary boundaries to exclude people 4) reinforcing faculty/staff hierarchies 5) defaulting to blind peer review

The students at my school did this. They negotiated for it, they got it, and they're disbanding their encampment now that they're done. Not one arrest. No police. The first campus in the UC system to do it.

It seems to me that when a society privileges a group to murder and abuse weaker people with complete impunity, the natural and proper reaction of a free person is to hate that group and resent the society that enables it, and acquiescence is a sign of unsuitability to be a free person.
5 years ago NYPD officers broke into Kawaski Trawick's apartment while he was cooking dinner and within 112 seconds fatally shot him. When asked if anyone was hurt the cops said: "Nobody, just a perp." NYPD just announced the cops will face no discipline.

Breathtaking article.
Making sure everyone has read Kate Wagner’s absolutely terrific — like a genuinely all-time, Grantland, SBN-in-its-heyday, talk about it 10 years later-style joy to read — F1 article that was mysteriously removed from the Road & Track website shortly after publication web.archive.org/web/20240301...

In other words the difference between "life creates it, makes it grow, it's energy surrounds us and binds us, luminous beings are we, not this crude matter" and fucking midichlorians.
Emotional realism trumps worldbuilding "realism" every time. I don't care that a power or whatever not got mentioned before or is explained beyond "quick, join hands and combine our life energies!" if it works. And if your interest is in your characters, not your playset, it will most of the time.
