about once a week, i have to explain to someone on the phone that the police have no obligation to do anything for you and, even if their refusal literally leads to your murder, the courts have been clear that there's no case to pursue
A man has been using Facebook to terrorize his ex and their children. He brags about it: “I want her to worry about who’s waiting on the corner.” But police do nothing and nobody seems to take it seriously. Chilling story from Stacy St Clair and Joe Mahr www.chicagotribune.com/2024/07/07/f...
How one man uses Facebook to frighten his children's mother and why police do nothingwww.chicagotribune.com An analysis of data from nearly two dozen Illinois police departments found police rarely arrest people for electronic harassment, even as complaints increase.

Kathy Hochul bravely defending the rights of New Jersey drivers to kill New Yorkers under their irresponsibly huge trucks for FREE because why come to the city and drink and then take the PATH home when you could just murder people
do we think this guy from New Jersey would have driven his pickup truck to Manhattan to get drunk had there been a $15 congestion pricing fee in place?

Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

You know that horrible moment after you wake up when all the facts – the fact that Biden is losing to Trump, that Biden isn't running the kind of active campaign necessary to come back from that deficit, the fact that Trump has announced he'll be a dictator - come flooding back? I hate that.

none of this matters. he wants a republican to win and a democrat to lose. he wrote the immunity opinion because trump is currently the republican nominee and he wants him to be the next president. you don't have to overthink this. roberts certainly didn't.
Even so, any self-reflection on giving a free pass to an unstable monster who thinks he got fucked by you 4 years ago might lead one to go "maybe I shouldn't."

Why I Don't Vote (OK, I Do Vote, but I Would Like to Discourage You, NY Times Reader, For Doing So For Some Reason) Via @bubbaprog.ilovecitr.us
Man, if it turns out that the right winger telling NY Times readers that they should follow his example and not vote did in fact vote in the last two elections, the Times should add this to the piece. Better than a retraction, since it illustrates a willful hypocrisy.

ngl sure is a weird history reversal that the UK chose July 4 of all days to throw off the yolk of their entitled and incompetent government, and over in the US the NYT and supreme court have spent the past week deciding that presidents are kings and voting is bad actually

It's not just that it's a piece against voting, it's a fake world-weary article about how civic disengagement is good from a guy with radical reactionary politics who spends his life doing advocacy (including publishing this op-ed in the New York Times)

“Oh Trump is a conman, he’s pulling the wool over peoples eyes” Yeah to some degree, but the main core reason he was President and might well be President again is a lot of people fucking love being racist

Everyone is always afraid to say why people like Trump or Marie Le Pen have some level of popularity and it’s just that there’s a lot of people in the world who believe in racism. You end up with these goofy ass explanations for Trump where it’s NAFTA or shit and it’s like no you know what it is

Losing to Trump should not be politically possible after the events of 2020, and Dem leadership has made it extremely freaking possible. They suck at everything. Let’s name that.

The Democratic Party has no good options because they opted to give the public no good options. This is a disaster of their own making and no one has a magic fix for the catastrophe they’ve created. That Trump could be so well positioned is an unthinkable failure of politics.

They're really just going to try and run out the clock on this...
I looked into this "virtual roll call" for the Dem presidential nominee, which may be moved up to July 21 (18 days away), and concluded there's no real reason to be doing it. The rationale is that Ohio has an early ballot deadline, but Ohio passed a law to fix that. DNC's going early anyway.

Absolutely, and let me tout my less-radical-than-it-seems suggestion of what to do about SCOTUS: sortition. Only the role of the chief justice is constitutionally enshrined. Write a Judiciary Act prescribing that the other seats get filled by a yearly random draw from the courts of appeals.
i mentioned this before but the last week or two has fully clarified that the rest of our lives is a drag-out fight against the supreme court that starts with priming the public to enthusiastically support — or at the very least resist decorum-based media calls against — completely rebuilding it

The "Biden Too Old" drama is actually extremely relevant to the Supreme Court / Trump dictator conversations. The Democrats keep annointing flawed, white centrist candidates with 1970s politics who everyone is already kinda sick of. That's how we got stuck with Trump in 2016. Build a bench, ffs!
Notice how everyone is somehow talking about Biden Too Old right now, and NOT about how the Supreme Court just legalized Trump being a dictator for life and gutted the administrative state, and how the Heritage Foundation is now issuing terrorist threats? Think that might not be an accident?

Like, I want to be really clear here: I want Biden to do much better, because I want him to win. But I also think everyone saying this is entirely a function of the media being mean and not due to campaign errors are just wrong. The concerns here are real, and they need to fix that.

The time between now and the DNC is roughly the same amount of time the UK had for its *entire* election season. It sucks, and I absolutely do not minimize the difficulty in climbing this mountain, to drop your candidate, but there *is* time if they do it now, but not time to delay it much further
