Here's more depressing Unfettered Capitalism news. The longtime owner of Second City, Andrew Alexander, who made his fortune launching SCTV from Toronto & then bought the whole operation, retired under a cloud & during Covid sold Second City to a private equity creep. Here's the whole series btw.

Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

Bluesky is the future; so many damn gay furries are here that after seeing their recent work in exposing the heritage foundation, nobody will mess with this place. Folks, if their smut lands on your feed by mistake, just hit mute and move along, they're keeping the lights on 😅

People in every field probably think the same thing. "Damn, is programming a uniquely good environment for sex pests?" "Damn, why are there so many sex pests in philosophy?" Everyone thinking somehow their specialized field is the outlier in number of sex pests.
I often wonder if abusive people are drawn to the arts, or if a certain amount of notoriety just makes people turn to shit. I am involved in a lot of different art scenes, and every single one has a whisper network about some big names who nobody feels they can address directly.

I know the latest NZ election outcome was less than good, but jesus.

i refuse to believe that americans who watched the debate think that biden’s first 15 minutes are somehow stronger evidence of old age decline than falling asleep, *in public*, DURING YOUR OWN FUCKING CRIMINAL TRIAL, *IN COURT IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE AND JURY*, but, you know, i’m not a columnist.
Trump’s public schedule showed that on most days, he worked (“worked”), like three hours a day. And this isn’t even a “Biden can’t work late at night” issue. It’s a Biden is pulling back on SCHEDULED EVENTS that start after 8pm, which is actually a good idea for most people.

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”
Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.

A fun thing about the Supreme Court is if it didn’t exist and you described how it worked as a good idea for a functioning country people would laugh at you and call you a dumb stupid ass bastard

You see if you demand bribery payment up front it’s a bribe, but if you do it upon completion of services rendered, it’s a “gratuity.” Like a tip for your bartender.

If someone ever tells you they have imposter syndrome, just remind them that Henry Kissinger was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

We talked about this a lot last year when Bsky was just getting going but I think an important thing to remember if you want to keep things tolerable here is that unfollowing/muting/blocking is part of routine feed maintenance and if there's stuff that bums you out every day, you should remove it

California middle schoolers were sick of roasting during heat waves. So they organized to install a heat pump at their school... and won! The California school bond likely on the ballot this fall should be funding heat pumps, not gas furnaces. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Um, were you guys looking for a great novel by a Black person to read on Juneteenth that explores the plight of Black Americans? I thought I heard that. Well, I think you should consider supporting the novel I wrote from a Black bookstore in my neighborhood online. It's Black southern gothic.
