We don’t need any new laws or ID requirements for voting. There is no voting fraud problem in the US. The issue is simply a voter suppression scam cooked up by the GOP, relentlessly repeated with fake studies and op-eds, no matter how often it’s debunked. There is no reason for new restrictions.

Humans can do impossible things for humanitarian reasons. We were told an HIV vaccine was impossible and impractical, but scientists slogged and labored anyway and the trials showed it to be so safe and effective that it’s being rolled out now.

People say that an arms embargo is unrealistic and so we should drop the demand but a lot of things which are unrealistic are demanded anyway. In fact the end of the occupation of Palestine itself is "unrealistic" but the Palestinians will demand it until it happens or until we are all killed.

The smoking ban is my go-to analogy for congestion pricing. Everyone predicted it would destroy the city and supporters were dismissed as nanny-state-supporting health nuts. Today, no one who remembers it would want to go back. Younger people can hardly imagine it was ever allowed at all.

I’m just barely old enough to remember both getting asked if you wanted the smoking or non-smoking section at Perkin’s and when the smoking ban was going to kill bars. Instead, it got my dad to quit smoking.

There's a slew of these "regulation works!" posts going around and I'd just like to add: From 1776 to 1982, the US lost wetlands at a rate of 60 ACRES AN HOUR, going from about 220m acres to 105m. Because of the Clean Water Act, by 2004 the US was reporting a NET GAIN of wetlands.

Public policy can fix broken things! Ohio's Cuyahoga River was once so polluted that it CAUGHT FIRE (at least 12 times since 1868). After decades of conservation efforts, parts of the Cuyahoga are near-pristine, parts are improved and parts still need attention, with restoration work in progress 🧪
