it is important to remember, when Republicans blather on about “small government” and “fiscal responsibility” that what they mean is “rich people should not have to pay their taxes”
The IRS reported Wednesday that it has collected $1 billion in taxes and penalties owed by hundreds of wealthy households who accumulated past-due tax debts for years while IRS enforcement dwindled.

I'd be shocked if data came back showing a new desire for Biden to step down is a top down phenomenon. Every relatively normal (non political junkie) Dem I talk to, every one, thinks the debate showed Biden needs to step aside. NY Times coverage is annoying, but the debate created this.

right wing think tanks are making thinly veiled threats of political violence, the Supreme Court has neutralized the regulatory power of broad swaths of government, and the fate of the executive branch depends on whether the 81 year old atop it can learn to breakdance or something. Happy July 4th

Every day proves Thaddeus Stevens right: there should've been big Nuremberg-style public trials of leading Confederates, accompanied by seizures of the assets of all pro-Confederate large landowners and businessmen, which should then have been distributed to freed slaves as compensation.
These guys are traitors to the republic just like their heroes Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee

So based on decisions from just this week, the President, as long has he has the gloss of officialdom, can basically do anything without legal restraint, whereas the President, acting via duly appointed agencies authorized by Congress, is more restrained than ever? What a coherent jurisprudence!

I think a thing that's poorly understood about American history is that a lot of the progress made through the New Deal was driven by the political elite's fear of the Russian Revolution happening here and not by them having a sudden turn of heart after being visited by multiple ghosts or something.
Not making any threats here, just thinking out loud as a historian — do they people brazenly pushing for impunity for the wealthy elites not know what traditionally comes next?

Cool at least there isn't an ongoing global crisis requiring tight and targeted regulation to achieve an enormously difficult goal within the next two decades that, if missed, is effectively irreversible on the scale of millennia
This is my sense of it as well. As with so many right wing projects,, the chaos will be fun and exciting to them for a while, but eventually things will get so baroque and absurd that they'll start slowly walking this back and maybe 10 years from now they'll make a new Chevron

Lest we forget, the New Deal, w/its admin. agencies, was part of a compromise designed to prevent anti-capitalist revolution. Laws protecting civil rights are too. Now that the USSR is long gone, and there’s no threat of revolution, the capitalist class is dismantling the compromises.

Pretty cool how we have a robust right to jury trial if you're some lawbreaking hedge fund or corporation trying to delay agency action, but if you try to sue one of them, there's an endless gantlet of federal statutes and procedural rules designed to throw your case out before you get to a jury.
Yikes SEC v Jarkesy is out. Court says 6-3 on party lines there needs to be a whole jury trial to impose civil penalties for securities fraud I covered oral argument for Balls & Strikes last year to explain why thats not great ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/sec-v... www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Some reduce the 2024 campaign to a contest between two old men, but it's a choice of two slates of federal appointees who'll impact your life in a million ways. Biden has staffed executive agencies with excellent choices who are doing good work. Trump will empower an army of Stephen Millers.
