This is my Mr. Hyde moment.

He said college students should just become Billionaire Activistman and solve bombs that way. Like all the other Billionaire Activistmen are doing right now.

Then they could tell the arms dealers to stop selling the arms! It all makes so much sense.

fun fact: if you actually had the 60+ BILLION dollars required to take over a publicly-traded weapons company like this, the entity you'd be saying "no" to isn't even israel, it's… the u.s. government, which is the middleman arranging foreign military sales
Avatar
Also: fiduciary responsibility. If the company is publicly traded, you can't make business decisions that you know will reduce the value of shares.
Avatar
if you're the majority shareholders then the executives aren't breaking your trust if they do something you directly told them to do, even if it turns out to be bad for the business though likely you'd have to navigate a bunch of lawsuits
Avatar
Even if you're the majority shareholders, you have a responsibility to the other shareholders.

He’s not proposing that they buy Raytheon. He’s saying they should become minority shareholders and propose a shareholder resolution, and persuade investors to support it. If it sounds like it would take a miracle for something like this work, you’re correct; it almost never does.
Avatar
Ah yes, Step 1, be rich
Avatar
Step 2: have your wealth depend on selling a lot of bombs
Avatar
Step 3: use the wealth you made from selling bombs to stop selling bombs.

the only way to halt the military industrial complex is to be heavily incentivised by it. I am a savvy pundit
Avatar
It’s not a bad idea if one interprets “activist investor” broadly enough.
Avatar
“Instead of protesting in a way that is accessible to them, why do the students not try a different route that is expensive, time consuming, and famous for almost never working?”
Avatar
I would love to see that!

I thought "no student goes to university knowing how to build barricades" was going to be the dumbest thing I heard all week. This late contender came in hot with a solid case, though.

Somebody was never invited to make a chair fort and it shows.

Or went through active shooter training
Avatar
We trained today's students to defend themselves against school shooters. Didn't expect the cops to become the school shooters they have to defend themselves from.
Avatar
"have you considered becoming morally and ethically compromised about the problem?"
Avatar
“why not just spend literal billions of dollars about it”

That’s it I’m founding irl avalanche, in roblox of course

Truly a "if you can't beat em, join em" entreaty. I personally would prefer to focus on beating them, but it hasn't escaped my notice that the people who argue for "change from the inside" are always the ones positioned to weather if that change never comes. Funny how that works...
Avatar
Skip a few ramen meals, invest in some defense contractors instead
Avatar
Students can't afford their own degrees. They can, however, purchase the US military industrial complex. Simple!
Avatar
Do you know how many shares of Lockheed Martin you could have bought with what you spent on avocado toast?
Avatar
"No, it's the kids who are wrong"
Avatar
Tbf, I would also be fascinated if any kids could pull of activist investing on a defense contractor lololol, yikes. what a take
Avatar
I’ve read a few Iron Man comics, so I think I’m pretty clear how that would work. By which I mean wouldn’t.

Starting a 50 billion dollar gofundme to make my 50 billion dollar investment worth 0 dollars

If protesting on campus gets you arrested on fake charges of terrorist sympathies, I imagine doing it financially would land you in fucking GITMO.
Avatar
Mostly it would just make you very poor

The out-of-touch ivory tower absolutely personified.
Avatar
I think it's more his experiences and how that's shaped him and his outlook?
Avatar
His entire experience is in or working for the ivory tower. If he had any experience outside of academia (or lobbying for or studying lobbying by academia), he might not sound quite so naive. Maybe he could walk across campus and ask the B-school guys abt shareholder proposals. They need a laugh.
Avatar
tbf, a guy with iirc 9 shares punched a hole in Musk's plans for a huge payout
Avatar
maybe a walton could but thats it

some of the hippies tried to “change the system from the inside out” back in the 1960’s. it didn’t work.

yeah instead they gave us the 80's

Lockheed is currently trading at $461 per share. There are currently 240,700,000 shares of Lockheed outstanding. So you'd need at least 120,350,001 shares to move anything that isn't gross negligence. $55,481,350,000 is at least what youd need. No sweat for some students.

"Hey, kids, have you thought about asking your folks for a 50 billion dollar CashApp?"

“But have they tried being venture capitalists about it?”
