The easiest lowest effort way to defeat fascism is just by showing up and putting an X in the right box. The other alternatives are much much harder - that’s why the far right puts so much effort into demoralising the opposition and suppressing the vote. They’re freaking terrified of democracy.

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

There hasn’t been enough said about the “Invisible Recession” of 2015-16 and its impact. While nationally the economy was “Meh, fine,” in those years, many states and localities were in technical recession - and **a lot** of those places were responsible for giving Trump an edge in 2016.
I know some people who voted Trump in 2016 because they felt like their communities were being ignored by Dems. Most of those never became die-hard cultists and may be redeemable. But people who voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 **because** they liked that he’s an asshole? Nah, no redemption.

Being in Australia, I should also point out that Australia's founders looked specifically at America's example of a presidential republic and were like, "Yeah, nah."
What’s frustrating reading Madison’s journal of Philadelphia is being able to see the Framers understand that the concept of a presidency is fatally flawed, but they talked themselves into going with it anyway. Meanwhile, history has shown that parliamentary republics are indeed the way to go.

I'm not a fan of quoting the Founding Fathers when it comes to contemporary debates. In most cases, I hate it. The earth belongs in usufruct to the living, the dead having neither powers nor rights over it. But as the U.S. approaches July 4th, these words feel particularly pertinent and relevant.

Honestly, from now until November, our rallying cry should just be "NO KINGS IN AMERICA" and we should make sure to take back all the American Revolutionary imagery we ceded to conservatives -- and make them fly the flags they *really* believe in. Because they sure ain't this flag.

Your honor, with all due respect, fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.
Your honor, with all due respect, this ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race.

Good morning to all my legal colleagues rolling into the office this morning in an open bathrobe, boxers, a stained t-shirt, and mismatched fluffy house slippers, clinging a bottle of vodka and answering every question with “What does it fucking matter, nothing’s real anyhow.”

Thinking about the time we had constituent who kept calling back “Until you put the goddamn Congresswoman on the phone!” so our Legislative Director just pretended to be the Congresswoman.

Social media nullified my journalism degree. SCOTUS nullified my political science degree. I very genuinely might as well have never gone to college.
Good luck to any history teachers out there who have to try to explain this bullshit in a US government class this fall. I thought quantum mechanics was a confusing mess, but hoo boy.

Biden has the opportunity to exercise some very “bold and energetic core acts” of the presidency right now.

End of financial year stakeholder survey results are in. So many measures resulted in 69% that I’m summarising it as a “Nice outcome.”

Also important to note: it’s not like the fascists will stop consuming it for themselves. They’ll continue to exploit already marginalised people to get it, retaliate against anyone who tries to call them out, and persist in punishing / controlling everyone else.
I know smut may seem like a frivolous thing to be upset about, but crushing it is part of fascism. Controlling all forms of sexual expression is fascism. Only allowing certain kinds is fascism. Smut peddlers are always canaries in the coal mines.

One of the overarching themes of my book series is how history gets distorted, deliberately and otherwise, to justify present actions and events. As much fun as I’m having with it, it doesn’t really become consequential until book 5. Which would be fine if I could get myself through book 1… 😅🥲🫠

Hi, are you doomscrolling? I know the presidential debate is historically important for a variety of reasons, and you want to be informed about the world. You also deserve enough time to rest and recover. Make an effort to get enough sleep, and charge your phone outside of your bedroom.

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.

Not acknowledging its existence won't make it not exist. People who look for "dirt" on furries are very aware of this comic. And I think it's important for younger furs to know what can happen to our fandom when you let haters take the reigns of your narrative, as was the case in those days.

Furries who aren’t rich or in tech fields sound off. I'm a business & gov consultant. I'm also a parent; and between childcare, housing, and essentials, basically on a knife's edge. Whatever I "save" from a paycheck usually gets taken by utilities or a surprise expense within a couple months.
