Shout out to my Latin teacher, Mrs Meijberg, who left that movie incandescent that the film got the thumbs up/thumbs down hand signal the wrong way round. "Down means sheathe your sword! Up means plunge it up into their heart!". We got very few verbs conjugated that lesson, let me tell you.
this stuff is so aggravating. some of the worst people in the world do this when classicists point out that the ancient world wasn't actually "the white guys, doin stuff!" but a diverse & complex system of relations & then they get like "but what color are the statues" (whose paint has worn off)

the thing is, the richest country in the history of the world could absolutely afford to fund FEDERAL SANDWICH, forever, and then while we might not be the coolest country because there's other stuff too, in one way we would be the cool sandwich country
POSTAL BANKING is a great idea and it leads me to my other great idea: FEDERAL SANDWICH. Guaranteed access to a sandwich to anyone who wants one at ANY US Federal Govt facility. Let me explain. No, there is too much, let me sum up:

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

Everyone is always afraid to say why people like Trump or Marie Le Pen have some level of popularity and it’s just that there’s a lot of people in the world who believe in racism. You end up with these goofy ass explanations for Trump where it’s NAFTA or shit and it’s like no you know what it is

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

Washington, like Oregon, state owes its easy voting system to restrictive housing covenants. Until 1968, Black people and Jewish people simply could not rent or buy homes. depts.washington.edu/civilr/coven...

Amazon delivery guy came up to my door, dropped a package, took a picture of it, then picked it up and left. Either he figured out it was the wrong house, or the porch pirate call is coming from inside the house. 🤣🤣🤣

Remembering that sobering Wait But Why post from 9 years ago: waitbutwhy.com/2015/12/the-... If you're an adult: remember your childhood best friends? The times left that you'll meet again is now disconcertingly small. If you loved them, every moment left is even more precious than it used to be.
The Tail End — Wait But Whywaitbutwhy.com No matter what your age, you may, without realizing it, be enjoying the very last chapter of the relationships that matter most to you. Make it count.

Just FYI we’re entering a summer Covid wave right now (especially western regions in the US); you can see it in the CDC wastewater plot here (and anecdotally a bunch of my friends are suddenly testing positive). www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.

I do not want email. I don't want email from ANYBODY. But I especially do not want email sent to a twenty-year-old address that you're then going to get mad at me for not answering. If you must message me, please, I beg, go through my website.

Started Olivia Atwater _Ten Thousand Stitches_ and am Ah an aristo/commoner; but no! Lo a fae offering a wager (see title) so ooh a romance and a puzzle? Wrong! It pivots to musing on class and gender, aristo bigotry, abuse, and pillage, and ends with a paen to unions. It is *such* a delight!

All studies: money solves poverty All poverty policies: well, we can’t just go around solving problems
Another basic income pilot focused on homelessness has released preliminary results after only 6 months because halfway through the experiment, it is already showing incredible effectiveness. $750/mo for 6 months led to homelessness dropping to 12% versus 23% in the control group on a wait list.
$750 a month, no questions asked, improved the lives of homeless peoplewww.latimes.com A study by USC and a San Francisco-based nonprofit has found that a $750 monthly stipend improves the lives of homeless people.

I guess I’ve become sort of a science-hype debunker so as far as this goes, let me just say: it’s real. Really really real. You could soon get a shot every six months that would basically eliminate your chance of getting HIV. Taken a step further: we have the tools to eliminate HIV in our lifetime.
Gilead’s twice-yearly shot to prevent HIV succeeds in late-stage trialwww.cnbc.com Gilead's experimental twice-yearly medicine to prevent HIV was 100% effective in a late-stage trial, the company said Thursday.

The way we’re all told to treat all this as normal. It’s fine that half your email is scams. It’s fine that you can’t answer your phone. It’s fine that every Instagram post is full of scam bait comments. It’s fine that people text you weird phishing links. Just adjust your behavior.

More and more I'm coming to believe this one thing is the root cause of so many problems that are often blamed on other things.
Wall Street’s pathological and ruinous demand that companies show perpetual growth, as opposed to healthy sustainable profits, is only possible in a world where firms are allowed to lock up markets, eliminate competition and collect increasing extractive rents at increasing scale.

There's an interesting problem in digital preservation, which is that preservation only exists actively. Only the things you actively move to new formats, survives. Community is probably the same way: it has to be actively maintained in order to outlive whatever spot it's currently in.
