I have been saying for at least a decade and a half that this is a major unexploited wedge issue for Democrats.
“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.

Francie is here with a BLEP vs. MLEM tutorial. A blep is when the tongue is just hanging out at rest, stationary. Mlem is an action word for when the tongue is performing a licking motion - hence the name which is an onomatopoetic interpretation of the sound it makes.

regardless of what you think of America there are a lot of good people here worth fighting for, and that’s what I’m going to hold onto regardless of what happens in November and those people are worth celebrating

Feeling despair at the world and something that no bullshit made me feel a little better was giving ten bucks to support someone’s work on Patreon. Not that it’s a big deal but being able to go “oh I like this, I want more of this in the world” made me feel like I had .00000001% control of things.

excommunicating the fuckers who won’t respect your duly elected authority because you want to use it on behalf of people they hate, and who have forfeited their right to power because they’re using it to undermine progress, is the energy I wish Democrats would take into the White House JUST ONCE

There are people out there who remember you for some small, random kindness you performed. You've forgotten these acts, but those people remember you because you helped them in their moment of need. Never underestimate your value in this universe. x.com/SpaceDadSupport/status/1809255551232057482

I still think this and I try to keep it in mind even while 80% of my feed is people expressing outrage and vitriol at anyone who isn’t wholeheartedly promoting some specific opinion about the best path forward for the world
I really do believe that most people are basically good, mean well, and want to have a positive impact on the world

Again, selectively ignoring blatant corruption and the criminalization of the press because “oh well that’s just Mississippi, they should move out the state lol” is how you signal there’s no commitment at all for a true politics of solidarity, commitment to principles.

I have two things to say about CPR. Actually 3. 1. Learn CPR. If you can't take a formal class for time/money reasons, go watch shit online. 2. You won't harm someone by performing CPR if they need CPR. You cannot make someone more dead. 3. Most CPR fails. Do it anyway.

We keep being given off-ramps away from fascism and slamming the gas pedal harder straight ahead. As a historian who has frequently taught the rise of fascism in 20th century Europe, I am absolutely, existentially terrified.

It's NOT over. It's okay for folks to be upset. Be mad. Be sad. Be scared. Go ahead and feel a little despair. But then you need to shake it off and clock back in. Go have your freakout in whatever way you need to, and then get your ass back into the fight.
Not over. As someone alive before Chevron precedent, before legal abortion, before many things being flipped back in time existed, I can say you can fight this war&win it. Again. &this time, people have sunk costs&reaped benefits where before it was theoretical. They will feel&resent the loss.

SOAPBOX TIME I hate how many times I read things like "nobody cares about the world" and "humanity is the virus" and "our species is too inept/evil/selfish to survive" online. I almost never see anyone talking about the many, many people who are doing incredibly hard, complex, good work

Nothing has actually changed. You have a choice between congresspeople and senators and AGs and school board reps It’s a long damn ticket to examine for your vote, just like you had last week. Nothing about Joe and that felon has changed. Eyes on the structural prize.
PERFORMATIVE DESPAIR IS NOT A POLITICAL STRATEGY. Do not conjure your own imagined demise. In particular, don't do it collectively, on a communication system meant to amplify emotional contagion. (simpler/more esoteric: don't do death magic at collective scale on your own minds, for fuck's sake)

I was just thinking about this because we live in a world where nobody has to have HIV in the future and we can regrow teeth and have tons of renewable energy and could really transform into a post-scarcity society, but "maybe we can take care of people" is still the most left of left positions.
it blows me away that saying “housing is a right” is an extreme position. “people should be fed.” also, given pride month: “trans people have a right to thrive” the centrist POV on all of these issues is “well be reasonable! not everyone deserves a place to stay” which is wild to me
