French crushed the far right and the Brits jettisoned the conservatives. We can fucking do this
A widely predicted victory for the far right in France has instead turned into a victory for the left *because people turned out in record numbers to vote.* Defeat is not inevitable and more progressive elected officials means more progressive policies.

Folks. It CAN be done.
BREAKING NEWS: Voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Some initial thoughts on the UK elections. 1. It confirms once again that when a center-right party veers to the hard right to weaken the far right, it ends up doing the opposite. After purging moderates and going full-on wingnuts and fever swamp, the Tories got decimated by Reform, not Labour. 🧵

Idk if I'm stating the obvious, but justices never write/speak like this. She's telling the world this is a five-alarm fire and the coup is on.
As Justice Elena Kagan wrote in her dissent last Friday, “The majority disdains restraint, and grasps for power” — and the justices are “making a laughing-stock” of long-standing judicial principles. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

This debate is a prime example of how profoundly we are ill equipped to deal w/the rise of authoritarianism. Letting blatant lies fly. Doing nothing to follow up on lies & ignoring questions. Normal rules don't apply. We need to think--CLEARLY--about the best ways to clear the air & support truth.

The AI trend of “we took this art and expanded it beyond the artist’s intent because *more* of a thing means better” - showing what’s “out of frame” in a shot from a movie, or turning a six word short story into a novella - speaks to what art actually is: knowing what isn’t necessary.
Was listening to a Sixty Minutes segment on AI. The host made it do a short story based on "for sale, baby shoes, never worn" and could not shut up about how good the result was even though it was pure soulless drivel. Think a big key to this racket persisting is not knowing what real writing is.

If you want to know what the Founders thought about the proper role of religion in government, they left us an owner's manual. It's called the Constitution. It only refers to religion three times, and every time, it makes it clear that the Founders wanted it far removed from the government.
This lawyer keeps insisting the Ten Commandments were a very, very important part of the founding but offers zero proof (because there is none) He finally says, well, Moses is on the SCOTUS building -- built in the 1930s! -- and yes, he's there, but so are Muhammed, Confucious, Hammurabi ....

Yes, if you don’t like the choice between Trump and Biden, think of it as picking between Stephen Miller and Pete Buttigieg, Steve Bannon and Deb Haaland, Michael Flynn and Lina M. Khan, Alex Jones and Jessica Rosenworcel, or Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Both sides are not “the same”
Some reduce the 2024 campaign to a contest between two old men, but it's a choice of two slates of federal appointees who'll impact your life in a million ways. Biden has staffed executive agencies with excellent choices who are doing good work. Trump will empower an army of Stephen Millers.

The problem isn't that AI can do your job (it can't). The problem is management thinks AI can do your job.
The NYT laying off half it’s art dept as they ramp up the use of A.I. tools is 100% related to UArts closing due to a “steep drop in enrollment.” Regardless of A.I.’s actual capabilities the story being told to (and accepted by) business leaders is damaging the perceived value of the visual arts.

I find it very odd that the NYT headlined this like it's a feature story about a silly neighborhood disagreement. But "Text Messages, Police Records Contradict Alito's Story of Upside Down Flag" is a much newsier, more direct way to describe this (very good!) piece.

How is climate change increasing the risk of heavy rainfall? It’s basic physics: warmer air holds more water vapour. So when a storm comes along today, there’s a lot more of it available for that storm to sweep up and dump than there was 50 or 100 years ago. A LOT.
This isn’t getting as much traction as it should but the flooding in south Brazil is horrific. Over 600,000 people homeless, entire cities have disappeared under water because we’ve been harming the environment so much and this will get worse as more rain hits the region

I think honestly a key to Trump's popularity. He inverted the theatrical aspect from one where the Meet The Press class were in on the joke and the conservative voters were the rubes, to one where the conservative chuds were in on the joke and the DC crowd were the rubes bsky.app/profile/rinc...
this is also why Trump broke the DC press so much, because as much as he was clearly our most pro wrestling president his version of kayfabe was clearly very different from agreed-upon elite DC kayfabe and they kept trying to put him in the latter box instead
