about once a week, i have to explain to someone on the phone that the police have no obligation to do anything for you and, even if their refusal literally leads to your murder, the courts have been clear that there's no case to pursue
A man has been using Facebook to terrorize his ex and their children. He brags about it: “I want her to worry about who’s waiting on the corner.” But police do nothing and nobody seems to take it seriously. Chilling story from Stacy St Clair and Joe Mahr www.chicagotribune.com/2024/07/07/f...
How one man uses Facebook to frighten his children's mother and why police do nothingwww.chicagotribune.com An analysis of data from nearly two dozen Illinois police departments found police rarely arrest people for electronic harassment, even as complaints increase.

I have never read one of these "we need a party for the politically homeless" pieces that does not go on to straightforwardly describe Democrats.

Today I'm reminded that NOAA is a phenomenal government agency because from the get-go they've been telling people on the Gulf Coast to pay attention to Beryl and make plans and until this afternoon regional weather services have been saying "bitches be crazy" when people have asked about it

an entire movement of wicked people who celebrate wickedness
As a side note, this is John McEntee, Trump's Director of White House Personnel and the primary architect of Project 2025. On Tik Tok he said he gives counterfeit bills to homeless people so they will be arrested when they go to spend them.

Like it or not, the Democratic electoral strategy of “democracy is on the ballot” may not be successful because many Americans have already lived most of their lives in a marginalized majority without a functioning democracy. It is a slogan penned by a tone deaf and privileged political class.

"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!
The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared

Just like none of the bold investigators backfilling Joe Biden's feeble debate performance with punchy anonymous quotes have ever figured out why Trump was rushed to Walter Reed, claimed he wanted a spur-of-the-moment weekend checkup, and a year later declared that he had NOT had a series of strokes

what are we doing here? he accidentally said million instead of billion and then immediately knew it and corrected himself. he didn’t “flub a line” and then “make an effort to correct himself,” he did the speaking equivalent of a typo that you know you’ve made and instantly correct

listen, I’m fairly open to people with a lot of views on the election, including people who say it the outcome won’t make a difference to them, but, even if that’s true for you, it will make a difference to the vast majority of people so get over your shit by November

AND he can pardon them proactively! He can give blanket pardons for categories of officers before he leaves office that the next President can't revoke.
I don't understand this point. Trump can just pardon them.

Imagine writing a NYT piece talking about how the court, actually, is good right now. But Will Baude did it! Essentially, saying that all they get wrong was the Trump cases — and then insists, sort of, IDK, that even that was for what they thought were good reasons. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/05/o...

my takeaway is that we should complain to managers about bad public transit near their shops more often
I also think it has to do with who complains. If you drive to a store or restaurant, you might tell the manager, “Ugh, parking sucks around here.” If you walk, bike or take transit, you probably don’t say anything. That leads to business owners believing that all their customers drive.

I’ve written at length in recent years about the pre-Montgomery Bus Boycott battles that Black southerners waged against Jim Crow. There’s an attitude that the modern Civil Rights Movement was a sudden explosion, but it was the fruit of years of planning. And superhuman courage.
There's another key attribute of hope that doesn't get mentioned much. Hope fights. Even when victory seems unlikely—especially then—hope fights. We should be hopeful people. Full essay: www.the-reframe.com/a-fools-hope/
A Fool's Hopewww.the-reframe.com How to be hopeful people in this age of deliberate ignorance, empty optimism, lazy cynicism, and manufactured despair. A more useful definition of hope than these false ones we're offered.
