All of the people indulging in these fantasy Democratic primary scenarios think that people vote reflexively because it’s what they themselves do; they don’t realize that turnout is a product of hard work. Unseen, unheralded work. By unseen, unheralded people.
I don’t know why they think pissing off the door-knockers and canvassing power of the party will end well, but these people don’t understand what they refuse to see

This is a good thread about the technical, logistical reasons any replacement other than Harris would be a problem. But there are still other reasons! People start early-voting very soon, and most of the non-Harris politicians being mentioned as trial balloons are not nationally well-known figures,
Aside from 1) the logistical problem (campaign apparatus and money are transferrable to Harris, and no-one else); 2) the narrative impossibility of rejecting Biden *and* his veep; and 3) the betrayal and division it would involve, what gets me is: people proposing folks with no national reputation.

One of the most powerful quotes I've seen about how this happens to a country and how this pivotal historical moment in America feels.
I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

about once a week, i have to explain to someone on the phone that the police have no obligation to do anything for you and, even if their refusal literally leads to your murder, the courts have been clear that there's no case to pursue
A man has been using Facebook to terrorize his ex and their children. He brags about it: “I want her to worry about who’s waiting on the corner.” But police do nothing and nobody seems to take it seriously. Chilling story from Stacy St Clair and Joe Mahr www.chicagotribune.com/2024/07/07/f...

The New York times literally running the 14 words in a piece on the print edition main page. “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is a mainstreamed version of the 14 words. TNYT is back to its Nazi defense

As a side note, this is John McEntee, Trump's Director of White House Personnel and the primary architect of Project 2025. On Tik Tok he said he gives counterfeit bills to homeless people so they will be arrested when they go to spend them.

It’s such a tell that one candidate is allowed to be old with his brains leaking out while the other is subjected to a weeks long whisper campaign to knee cap him out of the race because of a bad debate performance. Almost like there’s no principle at work beyond attacking Democrats.
Just like none of the bold investigators backfilling Joe Biden's feeble debate performance with punchy anonymous quotes have ever figured out why Trump was rushed to Walter Reed, claimed he wanted a spur-of-the-moment weekend checkup, and a year later declared that he had NOT had a series of strokes

And the fact that the piece didn't even mention that northern Idaho has been regarded as a haven for neo-Nazis and white supremacists since the Aryan Nations set up shop there in the 1970s is just a gobsmacking omission.

One of the reasons TA work is sometimes (AND OFTEN NOT) repetitive lower-skilled tasks is bc these are training tasks for early career scholars. If we automate them and eliminate the positions associated with them, we are explicitly gutting the future of these fields.

I once wrote a fact check of a Morgan Spurlock book. He included what he said was a direct quote from the FDA that aspartame causes cancer. I checked the footnote. An FDA newsletter did publish that claim — but *only to specifically refute it*. That’s basically how Barrett quotes Madison here.
These mistakes originalist justices are making aren’t about disputed interpretations of history, with evidence on both sides. They’re pulling quotes out of context to attribute ideas to founding figures that those figures adamantly opposed. (via @andycraig.bsky.social) reason.com/volokh/2024/...

Misogynoir remains Kamala’s biggest obstacle. She’s incredibly competent (also a big cop but democrats love that). But the racism & sexism could be too much for her chances of success. Especially if they’re doing this “DEI” thing like she’s a diversity hire.
Couldn’t even muster a capital letter P for “DEI president” in this poorly-worded, inflammatory, heat-seeking headline.

He doesn’t even bother to disavow Project 2025’s aims, but the fact that they’re shying away from direct association with it demonstrates that it’s a vulnerability. If the press is looking for something new and substantive to report on, they could start with the dystopia that these folks want for us

The "Ukraine never in NATO" crowd seems to think they're avoiding confrontation with Russia, but they're actually encouraging Russia in a confrontation that's well underway. Events are past the point where "don't make Russia nervous, don't push back, or they might get aggressive" becomes denial.
