BREAKING: An Indiana Republican has filed a bill that would allow kids as young as 14 to drop out and work on corporate farms during school hours. Kids would only need to complete 8th grade in order to work 40 hours a week as a farm laborer.

Republicans want you dumb, poor uneducated and working yourself into early grave for their personal benefit.
Avatar
Yes. An uneducated electorate is a GOP platform priority.
Avatar
I knew someone who had to leave school after the 8th grade in order to work. He grew up resenting people who were able to finish school.
Avatar
And the distrust of experts is born.

I knew somebody like this too but it was his parents he resented (that’s what he admitted to anyway)
Avatar
He didn’t admit to resenting his parents, and it was a different time. Can’t believe we’re regressing like this.
Avatar
It's almost like the ruling party has a direct incentive to put people who would otherwise share a goal into conflict.
Avatar
Indeed. He would be very much in TFG’s camp.

I forgot that Disdain of the Intellectuals and the Arts is a bundle. They want people to keep people stupid, so they are unaware of their rights as they march to early graves while causing hollywood to disintegrate into formless goo.

Conservatism is incompatible with human dignity
Avatar
I mean the Democrats do too, if we're gonna be honest about it
Avatar
democrats want you to be slightly better educated!

Just enough that you can contribute to the capitalism machine

Good time to remind everyone that the US is the only United Nations member that hasn't ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child...
Avatar
Not surprising really, IM sure I read an article where one state changed the law. Saying children could work as late as eleven pm on a school day
Avatar
Child abuse as public policy.
Avatar
The return to 19th-century child labor norms is moving along nearly unopposed.

Their little hands are so much better for getting inside the machines.

Avatar
That joke never gets old. Just like child laborers.

I think if I wanted, I could switch careers now and get into prosthetics making for the kiddies just in time!
Avatar
They'll never be able to afford prosthetics on farm wages. Perhaps crutches made from broken table legs and bits of old cloth? Or maybe bindle-sticks?
Avatar
Then I guess I’d have to learn how with what is available.
Avatar
The job of making prosthetics will fall to midhusbands.

Unless I need to flee something, I hope I never do. There are things I miss, like family and family, but I’m good. No judgement.
Avatar
eh no worries there. i moved home for family alone so i feel that, certainly. i do enjoy being back in indy, though, which surprised me!
Avatar
I went to visit my family on the south side a couple years ago after not having been for six years and it depressed me how overdeveloped and dirty it was. Didn’t feel like the same place anymore.
Avatar
And you know that, when these kids are adults too fucked up physically to do this work anymore, this same Republican will say they don't deserve help, because they are responsible for their own "bad choices"
Avatar
"what I gave these kids was an opportunity, it's not my fault they ruined it! they should be so lucky to take jobs from immigrants, the nerve of these adolescents, it's almost like I shouldn't have introduced this bill in the first place"
Avatar
Working our way back to the 1800s, one GOP bill at a time.
Avatar
I've said it before and I'll say it again: when we used to accuse the GOP of trying to take us back to the Fifties, we didn't realize at the time they meant to return us to the 1850s.
Bro, if originalist interpretations won’t fit modern America, then it’s time to make America fit an originalist interpretation.
Avatar
i have believed for a long time that the ultimate goal of republicans is to repeal the 13th amendment they are right on track with this law
Avatar
Except for the girls who have to carry a pregnancy to term.
Avatar
Avatar
They can give birth in the fields and return to work, just like the other serfs.
Avatar
And if they miscarry while working in the fields, someone needs to refer that to the District Attorney's office, stat. The only thing worse than a pregnant teenager without a menial job is a pregnant teenager who is too criminally negligent to quit her menial job for her maternal health.
