I sometimes recall that the military had to change how to present options to him. For a normal president the chiefs would give a couple reasonable options, one *they'd* prefer, and a couple crazy ones to steer him towards the one they liked. Trump always wanted the extreme option.
I feel like there are a lot of people who have forgotten what it was like during the Trump years to wake up every morning afraid to look at your phone and see what fresh atrocity happened since you went to sleep…

Here are two fun things about these alt right losers: 1.) They know their ideas are wildly unpopular and would never get them elected and 2.) They think it's hilarious to lie about what they want to do.
Stephen Miller now following Trump's lead and saying he has nothing to do with Project 2025. 1. His organization is on the Project 2025 advisory board. 2. He recorded a video as part of Project 2025 training tools 3. You can see Mandate for Leadership, the Project 2025 publication in the background

Me seeing that the lab has a policy called "Hood Service": "Hell yeah." Me seeing that what they actually mean is cleaning and maintaining the biosafety cabinet where we do all the COVID tests: "This sucks."

I fucking love not having a king, because I'm an American. I have hot, red blood in my veins, and I love that Americans get to govern themselves.

i was just going to make a post about this. if trump decides you are an enemy of the state or a “threat to national security” and has you deported, citizenship or not, there’s nothing you can do to get home. he has full legal power to render you stateless.
Related, if trump is summarily deporting citizens under his new mass deportation regime, citizenship and an ability to appeal to the law isn’t going to get people back in the country. The executive runs border security

NEW YORK (AP) — Rudy Giuliani is disbarred in New York as court finds he repeatedly made false statements about Trump's 2020 election loss.

If you are a pragmatist, as most leftists present themselves, you want MORE Jamelle Bouies writing for the NYT. If you are a whiny internet poster, you want him, a grown man with a family and a huge platform to express his left wing voice, to martyr himself.
You’re right. I am not going to denounce my employer for taking a line I disagree with because I would be fired. I think it is more valuable to not be fired and express my disagreement without denouncing my employer. This is a moral compromise I have made and can live with.

With the stated intent to engage in a massive deportation roundup, the option to use the Insurrection Act, and SCOTUS-bestowed immunity, I think it's worth noting how fast the total Trump takeover will occur. Weeks. That's it.
This often gets raised in the context of political retribution when the more obvious concern is civil society, protest groups, abortion providers, trans care providers, anyone "harboring" undocumented people. If you want to know how Trump will use DoJ just look to Ken Paxton in TX.

In a functional republic, Congress would do exactly what the Court does to them and say "SCOTUS didn't give us a rule to determine 'official acts' so we passed a law defining official acts." But that's probably not gonna happen!

Things like courts and laws and voting in a republican system give people an orderly way to handle disputes without killing each other. They keep the heads of rich people on their shoulders, but the rich always, always, always get up over their skis, because greed is insatiable.
Not making any threats here, just thinking out loud as a historian — do they people brazenly pushing for impunity for the wealthy elites not know what traditionally comes next?

It is wildly, unquestionably maddening how the Republican nominee is a widely and intensely loathed figure who is also a convicted criminal who is awaiting trial for stealing state secrets & staging a bloody coup attempt, and oh by the way he got hundreds of thousands of Americans killed & oversaw…

Correct. Additionally, they mean the following: women showing any skin at all, anyone wearing anything the worst homophobe you've ever met considers for "s," and basically any form of art that isn't a literalist interpretation of a Bible story.
and even if someone thinks "well I don't like/look at porn so why should it be a priority for me?" it's important to remember that when christofascists say "porn" they also mean age-appropriate comprehensive sex education, media with queer/trans people in it, and picture books about gay penguins.

This means romance authors. This means poets. This means screenwriters and playwrights and actors of anything remotely risqué. And eventually, anything secular. They have no point of satisfaction until they’ve erased all of non-Christian expression.
I'mma say this for all the people in the back. Don't vote for a person. Vote for your rights, for the rights of others. On page 5 of Project 2025's 180-day plan they openly call for outlawing porn, recommending imprisoning anyone who creates it. Are you an NSFW artist, or like the art? THIS IS YOU.

I think *they* think it's gonna be a lot of "Out of the way EPA! Drill, baby, drill!" cases they can greenlight, and are unprepared for the dry specificity and sheer volume of cases deciding whether there is a typo in the law describing the assay method for trace impurities in imported steel etc.
Gear up for several years of doctrinal chaos as courts try to figure out how to deal with regs in complex areas that the judges can't possibly understand ...

Overturning Chevron is going to usher in an era where self-taught judicial expertise in technical areas such as chemistry, statistics, mechanical engineering, biology, geomorphology, epidemiology, mathematics, and many other fields will once more be able to shine forth as it did in the Middle Ages.

Hell awaits these judges.
The Grants Pass law, as Sotomayor made clear in dissent, went further, banning public sleeping with any covering, so much as a blanket, even when no other options are available. This is a very troubling ruling.

This exchange got me blocked, which is fine. If you think I'm being annoying, I like that this website encourages you not to deal with me. But if you believe that if Biden appoints 5-4 liberal SCOTUS in his next term that will overturn Dobbs, for ex., you've lost the plot.

One way to read this is to understand that Republicans haven't backslid, they were fucking lying.
I'm very comfortable thinking of these people as my enemies. Someone else can win them over. I want them defeated, marginalized, and bereft of hope.

Human blood groups are fascinating. Mostly because we have ABO antigens that means you can only get a your type or O or you die. But most other mammals don't. You can give a dog blood from any other dog and it's mostly fine (caveats apply).

Can the Dems please start an ad campaign where they just say, "If Trump wins, you'll have to endure another term where he constantly spouts dog shit like this? Remember how he used to bother everyone with bullshit like this every single day? It sucked ass. Please don't do that to people again."

"Technically legal" is not a justification that anyone with any sense, anywhere accepts as an argument for installing a tyranny of the minority.
Getting some replies like "on what authority, all of this would be technically legal," and no, it is not legal to attempt to overthrow the government of the United States

There are 2 distinct factions in the current SCOTUS majority. Roberts, Barrett, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch: "If we're careful, we can preserve the image of the court AND lock the country in an eternal and plausibly legitimate theocracy." Thomas and Alito: "The point of power is to say 'fuck all of you.'"
This analysis probably overstates it, but it would nonetheless be pretty goddamn funny if Amy Coney Barrett is now getting an inkling that originalism is a load of crap. slate.com/news-and-pol...
Amy Coney Barrett Sounds Fed Up With Clarence Thomas’ Sloppy Originalismslate.com In a trademark case, Barrett agreed with Thomas’ bottom line but sharply disagreed with pretty much everything else.
