In the early 1970s, my grandparents sold their farm & the museum and retired to a hobby farm on the edge of Mitchell, South Dakota. But then my grandpa built me a dollhouse and started making more and more things out of wood. (Often small versions of things they had at the farm & museum.)

All biographical approaches to the work of Alice Munro must be revised to wreckon with her covering up her 2nd husband's admitted (convicted) sexual abuse of Munro's daughter. The story is horrifying, the reporting scalding: www.thestar.com/news/in-the-...

The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared

I need to write the whole piece about this, but the thing to understand is that the NYT is now just Facebook. The platform dictates narrative to normies, is totally gamed by the right, and is still so ubiquitous as to be unavoidable even by those who see how broken it is. It's just Facebook.

I come from a culture (this part of me is VERY Nigerian) where “respect your elders” is pounding into your psyche. I’m glad. I watch the way people talk about older people. The way we treat getting older, the fear, the denial, the sadness, the envy, 😮‍💨, it’s such a problem, smh.

Americans have a real problem with older people and the concept of aging. The culture is rife with ageism. It’s going to official bite us in the ass if we don’t address it. Wow.

Note: My mother is journeying through Alzheimer’s and the jokes I’m hearing about the disease enrage me. 🖕🏾🖕🏾 I also know what it looks like. That’s not what I see with Biden. I see an old slower man, who still can and is willing (for some reason) to work, even if he has his moments.

Project 2025 was from the Chris Rufo school of fascist communications, where you discuss your evil schemes out loud, confident the "normies" are not paying enough attention to notice. But now it seems less politically engaged people are taking notice. www.salon.com/2024/07/05/p...

Horrifying. Everyone knows the “proper” way to enslave Black people these days is by arresting them on some bullshit charge, coercing them into a plea without a trial, and then compelling their labor while in prison.

exactly. THE SHIP HAS SAILED. Batten down the damn hatches.
I don't even disagree in principle with them that Biden is not the ideal candidate, it's just abject cowardice to take that position NOW, as opposed to 15 months ago.

Everything's complicated and my hesitation about replacing Biden up to now has been informed by polls showing other candidates not doing much better. But a lot of people seem remarkably certain that Harris specifically could not win a general election for reasons I think they should say out loud.

In law school I learned that a death resulting from violence, even long past violence, can be murder. The exceedingly slow bullet, or long-acting poison. Who should be charged? Who, punished? What should be forbidden, what abolished?

if you want to age-gate the internet you must know for certain who each person is in a verifiable way when they access a website and that is simply the end of online anonymity, no matter how much you swear up and down it isn’t true if credit card info can’t be secured, neither can this
Senator, please let me implore you to oppose the bill no matter what. KOSA, like every one of these bills, hinges on identifying who is under 18 and therefore covered by the law. You can't do that without a severe invasion of privacy and deanonymizing every user. It's technically impossible.

The most recent is Sen. Wyden's own Invest in Child Safety Act, which would involve significant and meaningful improvements to addressing actual child exploitation online, so of course it has no publicity and almost no chance of passing: bsky.app/profile/raha...
Because I've gotten a few inquiries already and also because I do enough shouting about terrible tech bills that I should also give credit where it's due: @wyden.senate.gov's Invest In Child Safety Act is a perfect example of legislation that will *actually* meaningfully improve child protection.

Wearable brain monitors don't keep your data safe, neural chips are breaking down and breaking up inside people's heads, and BCI implementations continue to generally house just, y'know, a horrifying suite of implications when couched in this ongoing dystopian capitalist hellscape.
29 of 30 companies “appeared to have access to customers’ neural data without providing meaningful limitations on how they are allowed to share that information. Two-thirds allow for the sharing of customer data and almost another third left this unclear…”
Most brain monitors sold to consumers don't keep your data privatewww.newscientist.com A report found data privacy problems with the vast majority of 30 companies that sell neurotechnology devices to consumers. New US state laws aim to change that
