Esquire put my 31-year old (!!) AMMONITE on it's 75 Best Sci-Fi Books of All Time list: "Gripping and gutsy, rich in layers of feminist and queer thought, Ammonite gleefully throws a stick of dynamite into the sci-fi firmament." Almost the only one in Top 25 not on sale—BUT I'M NOT COMPLAINING 🤩

It’s weird that the last few years have involved having to wrestle with the NYT and CNN being full of shit while People and Teen Vogue of all things are doing their job for them

The question is, why the pedophile rapist sexual predator is free and happy?
Remember when the MAGA cult was screaming for the release of the Epstein files and now that they’re out with Trump’s name all over them, it’s all crickets and tumbleweeds from the party of law & order and family values? Good times, good times.

The ultimate tragedy of Born In The USA is not only was it co-opted by dummies who embraced it because they didn’t catch any words past the title but that it has no barrier for entry for singers. No peaks, no valleys. It starts in the middle & stays there. Happy Birthday is more challenging.

Days after the Chevron ruling a corporate healthcare system - which doesn’t pay any taxes despite being a profit-driven business - is now suing Medicare so that they can collect more *tax dollars* w/o having to meet the standards of care set by CMS. Some CMS regulations may be silly but this is bad.

So to confirm, now we have near-final numbers: Every time 19 Tory MPs get a bit grumpy this parliament and stick their letters into the 1922 Committee... ...it'll automatically trigger a leadership contest.
Worth remembering, for the next five years, that the Tory party rules ASSUME they'll have a large number of sitting MPs. e.g. to automatically start a leadership context only 15% of tory MPs have to put in letters. 15% of 130ish seats is... not a lot.

When you see the way the press is treating Joe Biden for aging in public, you see how they could treat Donald Trump for committing fraud, rape, espionage, and insurrection and never, ever will.

Due to the fireworks, New York City's air quality is the worst in the world tonight. When AQI is low, it's a good idea to wear a mask to protect your health. But this could soon be a crime, as one of the mask ban bills prohibits masks at "lawful assemblies." #NoNYMaskBan

Judge John Broomes, a Trump appointee, issued a nationwide Title IX rule injunction covering all children of "Moms for Liberty" members this week. That's bad enough, but the procedural/notice mess he made of it is also really absurd: www.lawdork.com/i/146289012/...

I’m seeing people talk about “designated protest zones” and “law-abiding protests.” Seriously, what the fuck are we doing here.

how do you rebut presumption of immunity? nobody knows. but you can't consider the president's motive in rebutting it or the fact that murder is against the law. doesn't matter if president says to his advisors "I would like to kill rival because I hate them." inadmissible
let's do the seal team six hypo. president orders st6 to assassinate a political rival bc rival is a threat to national security. possible this is absolutely immune under pres's commander in chief power. if it's not, then it gets presumptive immunity (which may be absolute anyway)

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"
Avatar
it says a great deal that roberts has time in his majority opinion to mock the dissents for their "tone of chilling doom" but can't actually manage to rebut this hypo. because he can't
also, the order to have the rival killed is itself an official act (directing the military, commander in chief power) so you can't introduce evidence of that even if you could somehow find a way to prosecute the assassination

The Ford pardon of Nixon would have been totally unnecessary. A million other actions and arguments in American history assume presidents aren't immune. It's a totally new idea, nowhere in text or American tradition. Arguably the least originalist major SCOTUS decision in American history.

“But her e-mails!”
The Epstein grand jury records that were unsealed today contain some entirely unsurprising revelations

if your instinct is "calm down, surely this is an exaggeration," allow me to assure you that it's really not
"Don't worry, if the president imprisons his political enemies, you can still get a writ of habeas corpus." "But to prove that's why you've been imprisoned requires proof of..." "Presidential motive!" "And under Trump v US, presidential motive is..." "Inadmissible!"

And even though bribery is one of the few enumerated “high crimes and misdemeanors” eligible for impeachment, apparently you could no longer prosecute him for it even if removed from office??
occurs to me that bribing the president is now /always/ legal, since in every case the only way to distinguish gratuity from bribe is via evidence that could never be admissible
