England's 1689 Bill of Rights a) established that the law restricted English kings & that kings' unfettered power threatened the polity; and b) formed the background for all colonial resistance to British rule from 1765 on. "Originalists" apparently reject this 334 y.o. legacy.

I find it is in fact effective to tell my students that I have faith that every one of them is more creative and interesting in what they can write than what an AI can generate, and that I would vastly rather read their thoughts, even with a few grammar and spelling errors.

I know everyone says "their reporters do great work" and that's true, but over the course of my life, the New York Times has institutionally had multiple points at which it was important to choose "be evil" or do the right thing and they've fucked it hard every time

Admittedly, I think many universities' HR depts would prefer if somehow the Almighty Objective Rubric always prevailed, but realistically, a whole lot of holistic aspects go into hiring! And most of the time, imho, 5+ candidates are pretty awesome; you can only hire one & you gamble & hope!
As everyone knows, when a university hires new faculty, they just stack all their credentials up in a row and whichever one is highest gets the job. Easy peasy.

This is one of the most dystopian signs I've ever seen. Republicans are quickly turning this country into an unrecognizable freakshow.

From Liv Yarrow, quoting Cicero A.6.1, a fascinating comment about Flavius publishing the Roman Calendar so that everyone could know when proper business days were. I hate petty oligarchical economically inefficient corruption so much -it's literally the Old Boys Network very much in action in Rome.

Remember who had did all of that agenda- and parameter-setting around terms like "activist judges" and "politicizing the courts?" They were telling you what they were going to do. When they accuse, they are always telling you what they are going to do.

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1

If you read Roberts' opinion he's also clearly critiquing ACB's concurrence.

As someone attuned to subtler forms of sexism in writing, it's also really hard not to read Roberts' tone as "Those Lady Justices - so emotional! So anxious & hysterical! We Cool Considerate Men are acting from Reason and Farsight in a way that silly impulsive women of color just can't understand."
It's not the worst of it, but what I may be actually angriest about (right now) is Roberts' smarmy smugness and dismissiveness in the final two paragraphs of section IV and the whole of section V. "Fear mongering," "extreme hypotheticals," "our perspective must be more farsighted," and this.

Fun fact: Richard Nixon tried repeatedly on both Broadway & Hollywood to use his Presidential influence to get "Cool Considerate Men" struck from the musical 1776 b/c he believed it was anti-GOP, & Jack Warner cooperated & struck it from the movie until 2002. Now Nixon could imprison Peter Hunt.

I can’t believe the Supreme Court just ruled that the president can sleep outdoors in a public space.

Both the “black jobs” remark and using palestinian as a slur are hopefully clarifying as to actual Trump’s ideology and worldview, in contrast with the imaginary trump some people have built up in their heads as the memory of his administration has receded

For real...there is not a single story on the New York Times page that I could find mentioning the fact that the GOP nominee for president has advocated for the daughter of a former GOP Vice President to be subjected to a televised military tribunal.

I think it is very easy for people to believe that folks who have always been courteous, friendly, and respectful to them and their rights will be that way in general with all people and all issues - and that they won't change over time.

a thing to remember, in all of this horror, is that these are not the actions of a political party that is confident it represents the will of the people, and who is currently out of power and enslaved to a deeply flawed avatar. the struggle is not over and they have not won

Thanks Carlos, I had been trying to find the right statute. Ironically, this actually _is_ a crossing the stupid Rubicon moment....
"Whatever he considers to be beneficial to the commonwealth and the dignity of divine, human, public, and private affairs, he shall have the right and the power to do and to execute." From the statute that conferred absolute power on the Roman emperor (*Lex de imperio Vespasiani*, section 6). 😬

I am almost always of the opinion that we must carefully and methodologically dismantle systems of oppression as smashing them outright will damage those who are trapped within them, but on days like today, it's smashy-smashy time, bitches, lfg.

This Originalist™ court has effectively immunized both the president and all federal law enforcement officers from any meaningful accountability. Because if there are two things the Founders cherished, it's the power of a king-like executive and armed agents of the government to act with impunity.

look i'll be clear, I will be voting, and encouraging everyone I know to do the same, against donald trump and the end of democracy in this country in november. I do not care if that means i'm voting for a man who is literally dead.

I keep getting invited by the DNC to volunteer for the convention and thinking, "Are you crazy? Volunteer to staff a Democratic convention in Chicago that is going to inevitably face large anti-war protests? A. Tear gas is really bad for folks with asthma B. I don't want to hurt anyone.
Yeah it’s not like we’ll see a repeat of 1968, when the Democrats downshifted to a Vice President at a convention in Chicago that was plagued by protests against the party’s support for an unpopular foreign war and wound up creating an opening for a candidate they’d beat before. Totally different!

YES THAT WORKED SO WELL AND DID NOT AT ALL THROW THE PARTY INTO A DIVISIVE NOMINATION CONTEST AND LOST ELECTION THAT WOULD HAUNT IT FOR THE NEXT HALF CENTURY
