Something big has happened over the past few decades in Paris & its suburbs: Car use has declined dramatically. Some key explanations: —Large reductions in car-centric street space —Vast investments in noncar transport modes I investigate @urbaninstitute.bsky.social www.urban.org/urban-wire/h...

It's not that AI will never create anything useful or profitable, it's that the vast majority of the $1 trillion estimated spend on it will be totally wasted. A few billionaires will get billionaire-ier, and everyone else will end up laid off and screwed. Like, duh. Duh duh duh.
I'm just a small town chicken lawyer, but even I could tell AI was mostly a FOMO-driving cash bonfire from the very beginning. "Over-building things the world doesn’t have use for, or is not ready for, typically ends badly" YES INDEED www.sfgate.com/tech/article...
'Incineration' of cash: Analysts question Google and Meta's AI splurgewww.sfgate.com Prominent analysts from Goldman, Barclays and Sequoia are questioning the decision of tech giants like Google and Meta to splurge on AI tech.

Hey, so. I understand that this is anecdotal and not research, but. It is WILD how useless social media has become for promo. It's a fucking disgrace, really.

I forgot all about this, particularly the part where my kid was insensible with laughter as she tried to reason out the most prosaic and therefore most horrific version of this scenario
The Bear is such an unrealistic depiction of running a restaurant. like there is no way a bear can fit under a hat

We’ve returned to the olden days, when word-of-mouth was the only real way to advertise. As an author, if you enjoy a book, please: tell your friends. Your group chat, your sewing circle, your family WhatsApp, your work Slack, the voice channel of your MMORPG guild, anything.

The amazing thing about this is that it is both good but also exactly the same movie.
A remake doesn't HAVE to be bad. There was a Japanese remake of UNFORGIVEN set in the northern islands during the Meiji era and starring Ken Watanabe in the Clint Eastwood role and it was really fhtagn good. www.imdb.com/title/tt2347...
Unforgiven (2013) ⭐ 7.0 | Action, Crime, Dramawww.imdb.com 2h 15m | R

We didn’t know how relevant this book would continue to be, unfortunately. Also we wrote it for new organizers and have consistently heard from long-time organizers that they have found it useful and valuable.

Quick 🧵 When I came out as trans my freelance career died. I'd always struggled (poverty/subtler pre-coming out transmisogyny), but places that had taken my work for years suddenly said they didn't need anything on "trans issues" (I'm an experienced journalist who's written extensively on history)
When someone talks about whether you can separate someone from their work, I know the someone they’re talking about is a white man. Marginalized creators (including young women who are that man’s victims) are never allowed to have their work considered apart from their marginalization.

Me, looking at the Dril candle tweet: oh I get it he should stop buying the candles AI guys, looking at the Dril candle tweet: this is the new trolley problem
Everyone knows what to do about it. Describe the situation to a 5yo and they'll tell you what to do about it. Hell, ask a LLM what to do about it and it'll tell you "stop using the power-hungry AI." Just because corporations don't like the obvious solution to a problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Power-hungry AI is driving a surge in tech giant carbon emissions. Nobody knows what to do about ittheconversation.com Google, Microsoft and Meta have all reported significant emissions increases due to AI.

I keep thinking about how the SCOTUS justices, who have proven they care a TON about their media coverage, issued the worst decision since Dredd Scott and then got to happily watch outlets spend the next week running 10,000 “Biden in Trouble” stories and like 5 “Hm, Immunity is Interesting” stories

If we really want to know how to separate the art from the artist, we should ask whoever at Marvel dealt with Kirby's original pages between the 1960s and 1990s

NOT consent if it isn’t: -informed -considered -freely given -participatory & enthusiastic -revocable without repercussions Power dynamics, financial security, physical safety all factor into a coercive state. Being scared to say no, is not a consented yes laws need to catch up to rape culture
not all abuse is illegal. not all abuse is rape. that doesn't make it any less horrific, and it doesn't nullify the story being told here, which is of powerful people using vulnerable young people as disposable playthings. no more on this from me.
