Semi-regular reminder that I will vote for an actual cabbage if it is at the top of the Democratic ticket in Novemeber
Just because someone is coconut pilled and believes Kamala is currently a better candidate than Joseph Robinette does not necessarily mean they will not vote for him in November if he is the top of the ticket. I wish the Joekanda forever crew would stop conflating those two things.

making laws banning specific individuals from accessing medicine and healthcare that significantly increases their quality of life seems a pretty good definition of Fascism.

Fascinating look at the inevitable collapse of the "immersive art experience" fad, because after Monet, Van Gogh, Klimt, and Kahlo have already been done, and most copyrighted artists are too expensive, what's left? www.artnews.com/art-news/new...
New York’s First Permanent Immersive Art Center Is Pivoting to Puppy Yoga and Other Activationswww.artnews.com The Hall des Lumières in New York has quietly taken a "pause" on new art exhibitions this year.

Nearly 2 million people have been displaced in Gaza – almost the entire population – after the Israeli military last week ordered a further 80,000 people to evacuate parts of Gaza City amid a renewed ground operation, the latest UN figures show.

"voting doesn't make a difference" ok sure mate, now I just gotta decide which is more likely, that all the votes in all the elections in all the world have never mattered in any way or that some cynical lackwit on the internet is wrong

There's lots of reporting in the story that is serious and disturbing if true—what's the point of throwing in an anecdote that you acknowledge is bogus? The paper has some bizarre institutional belief that throwing weak stuff on top of strong stuff make the story stronger.
Setting the particular topic aside for a second, this is a truly spectacular case of the Times' pathologically incompetent "Where there's fire, there's smoke" theory of writing up high-stakes investigative stories

the worst dudes online are the guys who are like “the time for electoral politics is over, it’s time for guillotines.” yeah bud i’m sure you’ll stop posting and get the ball rolling on the guillotines any minute now.

I really have lost my former tolerance for "we're doomed/fucked/it's all over/they've won" takes at this point, in that they're the most dangerous attitudes one could possibly have when confronted with a truly existential political threat (which we still DO have levers to address).

You can say Trump is a rapist because by definition he is. His supporters are fine with rape. That makes them shitty people. They can’t deny it. They’re cool with raping. Evil. The fact every headline about Trump doesn’t say “Rapist Donald Trump” is the media complicit in whitewashing a rapist.

reminder that there was a time when they were literally selling radium soft drinks in the USA that were so toxic that the biggest fan of the brand had to be buried in a lead coffin because of how much radiation poisoning he got from them and this death led to the FDA regulations that exist now
Everyone knows Coca-Cola used to contain cocaine, but people don't talk as much about how 7 Up used to contain lithium as a mood stabiliser.

National news coverage of gender-affirming surgeries for trans youth strikes me as the same as national coverage of "late term" abortions: it takes a vanishingly small number of events, frames them as irresponsible, and elevates to national concern what are ultimately specific cases with clear need.

I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.

No FDA, no EPA, no CDC - the Chevron ruling by SCOTUS means that none of these agencies’ policies are the law of the land anymore. Bye birth control! Bye clean air, water, and safe food! It was nice while you existed.

Overturning Chevron is going to usher in an era where self-taught judicial expertise in technical areas such as chemistry, statistics, mechanical engineering, biology, geomorphology, epidemiology, mathematics, and many other fields will once more be able to shine forth as it did in the Middle Ages.
