How does fascism even know when to stop like it's logical end point is just one incredibly racist guy atop a planet of literally rotting corpses What kind of a win is that, long term, especially compared to something like fully automated luxury gay space communism?

BREAKING NEWS: Voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Just absolutely amazing scenes tonight across France as they fight the fascists back. Now it’s our time to be brave and come together to for a united front.

tom nichols—of all people???—just made a good point: you have to talk about P2025 in simple real people terms. not policy wonk terms.

For the rest of their lives, whenever the justices in the Trump majority meet a member of the public, they should hear only one thing: “You betrayed the American constitutional order.” Let them hear it at every law school Q&A, every cocktail party, and every trip to the store.
This is the best analysis of the Trump opinion I have seen.

People are getting confused and thinking this means I think Joe Biden is the ideal candidate or that nobody else would do a better job - not true! I just think that decision was made four years ago and reversing it is a guaranteed path to utter catastrophe
Joe Biden refusing to take advice from people who have been wrong about everything for decades could be seen as an indication his brain is still working

To be clear, this bill is nonsense, and he is straight-up calling for the murder of every Democrat in Congress. It is already illegal, as a matter of federal law, for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. This doesn't change that. What it does is a national ID mandate for voter registration.
I think this is the first time Musk has suggested fellow Americans should be executed.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

I think we could all use a bit of pick-me-up right about now, so seeing as it's July 3rd, why don't we once again reflect on one of the greatest white supremacist self-owns in military history:

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1

It's just hilariously disingenuous. Imagine looking at, say, ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and concluding that the biggest threat to liberty isn't abuse of power, but powerful people refraining from sufficiently wielding their authority out of fear that they might one day be held accountable.
It's not the worst of it, but what I may be actually angriest about (right now) is Roberts' smarmy smugness and dismissiveness in the final two paragraphs of section IV and the whole of section V. "Fear mongering," "extreme hypotheticals," "our perspective must be more farsighted," and this.

My first read: If a president commits crimes unrelated to him being the most powerful person in the world, he can be prosecuted. But if explicitly uses his powers to commit crimes, he is at least presumptively, and probably absolutely immune from prosecution. I mean, holy shit.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

Such pronouncements are often premature and exaggerated, but not today. This is one of the worst things the Supreme Court has ever done. You could reasonably argue the worst in living memory, which is a very high bar. It’s that much of an abomination.

I used to really care about the Supreme Court as an institution. Someone gave me SCOTUS water glasses as a wedding present. I'm that girl. I don't respect the court anymore. The conservatives are hacks. Roberts et al. deserve to be mocked, booed, & ostracized for the rest of their miserable lives.
Roberts is not the worst member of the court, but he's a bad judge and it's always worth remembering that. He's the guy who wrote Shelby County. On any reasonable court, he'd be the conservative crank writing dissents.
