I’m in Warsaw talking about the future of the European economy, so I’m late to this party. But I’ll have a blog post up soon very reluctantly making the case for Biden — the best president of my adult life — to step aside in favor of Harris.

Please rethink this, Mr. Krugman. It's an idea that is simply not living in reality. Vice President Harris is more than ready and capable to take over should it become necessary. It is not necessary. President Biden has not stopped being the best president of your adult life, and mine.

Why not? Every other columnist at the Times is doing their best Chicken Little; may as well join the party.

Kuddos, for acknowledging that it would be Harris and not mystery savior candidate, Johnny Unbeatable. However, this wouldn't be a costless switch. You have to add in the chaos this transition would unleash at this juncture and I don't know that would leave us in a better place at the end.

Cmon Prof Krugman, the man had a cold

How very New York Times of you.

So we can go back to misogyny instead of ageism? Ok. Look, we all know the newsboys want Pulitzers on the backs of dead pregnant people but it’s silly to think you would treat Harris any differently than Hillary or Biden.

I am quite enthusiastically telling you that you don't know what you're talking about.

There is 0 chance that Biden will step aside. It's a waste of time to even talk about this.

The way all the opinion-havers are just following each other over a cliff to create the assigned narrative is unseemly.

Two reasons to take this more seriously than other calls for Biden to step aside: 1. You explicitly name the alternative 2. It is the sitting VP, whose main job is to take over when POTUS is unable. Not *sure* that level of panic is warranted, but if it is, Harris is the obvious alternative.
Avatar
Just logistically that's not going to happen. Did you stand too close to Ezra Klein and catch a virus?

Stop saying Biden needs to step aside. It was a bad night exacerbated by a cold. Pushing him aside is a recipe for chaos.

You of all people both should know better and shouldn’t.

And I hope they ignore you, as someone who wants to see the Dems win in the fall.

Please don’t do that. Your admirable brain has been infected by the New York Times.

Ask Trump to step aside. Also ask Dana Bash and Jake Tapper to retire. Biden has been a great president and will continue to do good things for American people. He had a cold and looked pale next to that fake tan comb over lying traitor reality tv show creature. And they let him lie lie lie and lie.
Avatar
The media has spent a long time ceaselessly banging the drum of “he’s too old” (vs a candidate literally 4 yrs younger and in much worse health.) cool that you’re falling for your own propaganda.

Zero of the people doing this today called for him to step aside for enabling a genocide for 8 months, but then he was bad on tv once and you’re all losing your minds. What an unserious group of Very Serious People we have.
Avatar
why not wait to write it after your blog post saying that Trump should drop out since he’s a multiple convicted felon and rapist and conman and fascist? Why not Paul? No clicks?
Paul, did you notice how fast trump was talking? Do you remember how he pre-accused Biden of being high on Mtn Dew (which he wasn't)? You know how trump projects. Everything he accuses others of he is or has done himself. He projected Biden being hopped up on Mtn Dew, etc. Biden wasn't. Trump was.

Not that you care but that's an unfollow

If you’ve lost Paul krugman….

His years at the Times finally caught up with him.

This isn't helping anyone. Incumbent advantage is real.

yeah, that'll solve all our problems

I rarely disagree with you, but I do here. Still I'll read your case when you put it online.

So the same as the rest of the NYT? Might as well pick the one column you like the best and copy it.

If you see Very Serious People still suggesting replacing Biden on the ticket, understand that they are not, in fact, very serious.
Avatar
lol, no. For better or worse, the dems have hitched our wagon to biden. Maybe we could have pulled it off a year ago (maybe even 6 months ago), but the suggestion was dismissed outright so we’re stuck with him. Better work on our gotv

Professor, I understand the ageism of the young, not of the old. Biden was tired and his voice was labored, but his answers were on point and detailed, as opposed to the childish lies of that filthy clown. Even Nobel laureates spout bullshit, after all.
Avatar
Why don’t you live in the reality we have? I have noticed that the people jumping to this take all seem to be old men themselves.

An underserved perspective in the NYT.
That ship sailed. If he wouldn’t step aside a year ago, he won’t now. More ink spilled saying he should is only going to depress turnout. Fight the party machinery that put Hillary and now Joe in without a selection process.
