Guy literally had secrets in his bathroom, selling them to foreign nationals. Calls people to steal votes. Sends a mob to keep himself in office. This country pissing all over its history to bend over backwards for this guy? This is the guy we bring down the whole experiment for?

God I am so tired of the Biden is old discourse. I wish the media would focus on something else.

Thinking a lot about how the bipartisan project of police immunity to law helped set the stage for this.

Gonna keep saying this & will die on this hill: Bad news without any guidance on what to do about it [at least some ideas] demobilizes and often encourages inaction. We on the Left(s) have to avoid cynicism which is deeply corrosive and also counterrevolutionary.

So my girlfriend is French and hasn’t heard of Apollo 13 and so while we’re watching it she has no idea how it’s going to end. I am predicting she’s going to scream and cheer at splashdown

I applaud the New York Times and Washington Post for their commitment to producing “unbiased” reporting that is oftentimes so morally reprehensible that I consider cancelling my subscription. As a reader, I enjoy feeling like I have been dipped in slime whenever I visit the homepage. Also, recipes

I am begging democrats to learn this lesson frontload your benefits, slap your name on them, and get the disruption over with as fast as possible so people get used to the new status quo it is worth paying a political price for some policies but that price does not have to be as big
Same instincts that lead to many of Obamacare's benefits not kicking in until 2-4 years after it passed leaving Dems stuck defending a law voters saw as massively disruptive and risky without delivering any benefits to them in the meantime.

what's great is how multilayered a success this is. It won't win a single conservative voter and it greatly demoralizes a huge number of liberal voters, all while being morally indefensible and a treaty violation.
President Biden announced an executive order on Tuesday to essentially block asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border, a major shift in how the U.S. has historically handled claims for protection. Here’s how it will work.

e.g., here's a list of policy positions embraced in the late 1960s by Walter Huss, the white supremacist and Christian supremacist with ties to a wide range of fascist organizations from the 1930s into the 1990s who became the chair of the Oregon GOP in 1978. He was considered "nuts" at that time.

It took 30 years to build up the infrastructure of abortion funds. It's why there was no need for "underground railroads" that some people were posting about after Dobbs. So what we can all be CONCRETELY doing is to strength the infrastructure while fighting for actual reproductive justice. THE END.

I think one of the hardest things to accept is that fascism and fascists don't need to be smart to be successful, do huge amounts of damage to institutions, and end lives. German intellectuals thought the Nazi party was too chaotic and stupid to ever come into and hold power.

FILMMAKER: In my film I created Samantha as a cautionary tale about abandoning other humans. TECH COMPANY: At long last, we have created Samantha from the classic sci-fi movie HER
“The era of the detached, impersonal AI helper is coming to an end,” Kevin Roose writes. “Instead, we’re getting chatbots modeled after Samantha in ‘Her’ — with playful intelligence, basic emotional intuition and a wide range of expressive modes.”
A.I.’s ‘Her’ Era Has Arrivedwww.nytimes.com New chatbot technology can talk, laugh and sing like a human. What comes next is anyone’s guess.

The coverage of universities calling riot police on their students has been really feeble. One of the first questions I’d ask is, “did you have a statement prepared in the event you killed one of your students?”

an underreported thing at these protests is the cops LOVE hitting women. they always go for the rail-thin girls wearing makeup first

I didn't see anyone talking about antisemitism when neo-Nazis were matching in the streets and, where I taught at the time, booking the biggest performance venue on campus. The university said their hands were tied. They didn't protect their students from the possibility of racist violence.

They want right-wing speech to be protected on campus and people protesting genocide to be ground under. Some people call this hypocrisy, but it's much more sinister than that. These double standards are about HIERARCHY. They're about how the right wants to order the world.

I want better reporting on the motivation and pressure behind Columbia and NYU’s shitshow reactions. Which donors or politicians are making threatening phone calls? What/who are administrators afraid of and why? Coverage so far offers basically no insight.

Very funny to me how Weiss and Berliner both tried so hard to get fired so that they could become martyrs of liberal bias but their publications were so committed to letting conservatives do and say anything that they had to resign
You heard it here, folks: Berliner was "punished for heresy" by trying and failing to get himself fired, then resigning in a huff and claiming he was "cancelled." Just like Bari Weiss. You'd think even Robby Soave would be ashamed of this level of intellectual dishonesty. @mmasnick.bsky.social

One thing about the liberal-conservative/urban-rural divide generated by internal migration is there are *a lot* more liberal people in urban areas who grew up in non-metropolitan areas and know exactly what conservatism is than the other way around
The frequently asserted conservative belief that liberals grow up in bubbles and aren't exposed to conservative ideas and so need to be forced to be exposed to conservative ideas is so far removed from reality it's insulting.

This is also, not coincidentally, a load-bearing plank of the Trump campaign. Every time he gets away with this stuff some judge is basically making a stump speech for him
if you threaten a judges’s family and it is ignored via New Privileges I Just Now Invented to avoid using powers ordinarily exercised without hesitation, you do in fact have extra-legal protections. the legal system a judge is nominally trying to protect by inaction is just as compromised in the end
