BREAKING NEWS: Voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Still remember when they compared a family moving to California to maintain their trans kid's access to health care to a guy who left California because he was afraid of offending liberals at work
I know they get rolled all the time but for the Times to get rolled by “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is the Times putting the 14 words in the paper

in part because they seem totally orthogonal to where various dems land on the political spectrum from center to left. there's no pattern that I can discern to which dems are calling for biden to reconsider, other than that the leftier flank (squad etc) has been notably quiet
at this point i've given up guessing what will happen or what the best outcome would be and am just fascinated by the intraparty dynamics here

Just like none of the bold investigators backfilling Joe Biden's feeble debate performance with punchy anonymous quotes have ever figured out why Trump was rushed to Walter Reed, claimed he wanted a spur-of-the-moment weekend checkup, and a year later declared that he had NOT had a series of strokes
"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!

this is consistent with my general sense that many of the justices really, really don't understand both how much they are disliked by an increasingly fervent and expansive segment of population, and the extent to which those people are now paying attention in a way they weren't before

My god, they've made a Mechanical Trump.
Well this is grim

I see the reasoning here, and I don’t disagree with it, but what gives me qualms is that this is also the same reasoning used to make a poor person stealing a loaf to feed their family into a serious felony.
A hill I will die on: all white-collar crimes are violent crimes. It's just that the violence is removed from the perpetrator because the perpetrator is wealthy.

Let me be clear. In my opinion, John Roberts has joined Roger Taney (Dred Scott - slavery) as a Chief Justice who will be remembered as an evil man. Not just wrong, but worthy of eternal condemnation for trying to destroy the Republic.

I'm very pleased that our cats don't appear to be bothered by fireworks. Helps there aren't any going off right next door, plus we don't react to the sounds and so the cats think it must be okay. But they made a point of sleeping on me last night.

They're gonna need someone to wake up the 1922 committee and get them to change all the rules first. And this, kids, is why you ask experienced TTRPG system designers like me to draw up your political game system rules...

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

Watching the British election returns I feel compelled to point out that the 650 person House of Commons represents 67 million people and the 435 person House of Representatives in the United States represents 333 million. Replace the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929. We deserve representation.

I want to make liberty as expansive for every American as it was for wealthy, white, landowning, males in 1787.
If you’re going to argue about the execution of America as an idea, then you aren’t understanding the power of internal mythology and you’re part of why conservatives can keep claiming it. The point is the promise of America, and the discussion should be how we can better live up to the promise.

America is a country that occupies the land of my nation and which shouldn't have existed in the first place, but I'm still proud to be a member of a country founded on the ideal, no matter how hypocritical it's been in practice, that no man is above another. That is an ideal worth fighting for.

The thing that kills me is that outlets like the NYT and WaPo are some of the last newsprint holdouts of straight news reporting, while their editorial departments have turned into click-farming hives of ragebait.
