TRUMP: I am going to drop daisy-cutter bombs on Seattle just cuz BIDEN: I'll have the Bob Salad — ha, COBB Salad, whoops. NYT: Biden's Gaffe Sends Shockwaves Through Democratic Party; Trump Pledges Infrastructure Changes to Northwest
what are we doing here? he accidentally said million instead of billion and then immediately knew it and corrected himself. he didn’t “flub a line” and then “make an effort to correct himself,” he did the speaking equivalent of a typo that you know you’ve made and instantly correct

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared

For everyone on here that is worried that voters are as willfully credulous as our news media, the Biden campaign understands that Trumps post about Project 2025 is an admission of vulnerability and they are leaning in harder on tying him to it.

Anyway, I don’t know what the right solution is. The debate was bad but the hysteria has transformed it from a half hour of jumbled answers from an old man with a raspy voice to 90 minutes of on-air catatonia. That never happened. I certainly want to see how Biden handles his interview tomorrow.
It's telling that the NYT dug around for a monarchist weirdo (who votes lol) to write their "Don't vote" piece, instead of one of the many available exhausted leftists antielectorialists

I remember when Trump was defeated, seeing people non violently celebrating in the streets and I remember the cops, especially NYPD, crying. You should remember this too. You should REALLY remember this.

They want your despair. Withhold it.
Things are bad but all the more reason for optimism of the will and rejection of doomerism and nihilism. Only way out is through.

Okay, I am going to be off this website for an unknown length of time, as I suspect people are going to be *extra* awful now, but I will say a few things first:

I joke a lot about my capacity for despair, but there's enough Catholic discipline in my youth to remember that it is in fact a sin, one that absorbs all the best in you more comprehensively than a tar pit. I left the church ages ago, but I held onto that cable: despair is not a long-term good.
I have to think the overlap between (person who watches debates) and (genuinely undecided voter) is not zero, but it's definitely in the "300 million Americans holds a lot of weirdos" category

The media isn't interested in the biggest technology story of the 2020s, the rapid transition to clean energy, because 1) it will destroy a bunch of oil based wealth and is a boring, competirive low margin business 2) it makes Democrats look good for helping it and they want Republicans to win
THERE’S A QUIET NEW DEAL GOING ON The antidote to Project 2025 is happening now and will die if Trump seizes power. So let’s make some noise.

There was a specific moment in July 2016 when 1 in 4 mobile phones in the world was playing Pokemon GO. That was a surreal thing to have been a part of.

This is a "mumble tub" or mercury delay-line computer memory unit. It sends an audio pulse through a tube of heated mercury metal, preserving data as analogue waveforms. The transducers were in human audio range, so it was said these sounded like whispering or mumbling people when in operation

PrEP is one of the great miracles in the history of medicine and moving it to a twice a year shot will make it so much easier for people to use it's hard to articulate just how amazing it is that we moved HIV from a guaranteed death sentence to something people no longer have to experience at all

fwiw, it's also the same basic dynamic as all those dads for whom "being a good dad" is this one giant performance of guns to protect their family (or prepping or whatever) but mundane systematic tasks like loading the dishwasher or getting kids ready for school is beneath them

Thinking about how many different people from multiple countries worked together for DECADES to save these little horses is a reminder that most people are good, and there’s hope for us to unfuck so many things 🥹

For all the "corporate greed is why Google search sucks now" takes, every other search engine sucks too. Google's misguided short term profit focus doesn't help, but the primary problem is that the Internet itself is becoming increasingly unsearchable because of advanced SEO
