I love Slavic faerie tales; they’ll be like “there’s this creature that eats your feet if they dangle out of bed at night - also it’s a dead abandoned baby with the face of an old man that screams like a thousand mothers mourning their sons lost to war and it shits black rotting fish”

Labour’s campaign was extremely cautious, and given past defeats I understand why. But now the UK center-left has a huge majority in a system with many fewer choke points than in the U.S. Let’s hope they’re ready to govern like the dominant party they now are

i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)
Something Has Gone Deeply Wrong at the Supreme Courtwww.theatlantic.com Jurists who preach fidelity to the Constitution are making decisions that flatly contradict our founding document’s text and ideals.

I think we could all use a bit of pick-me-up right about now, so seeing as it's July 3rd, why don't we once again reflect on one of the greatest white supremacist self-owns in military history:

Voting matters. P.S. If that statement makes you angry, feel free to express that anger at me so I know to block you. kthxbye
The key to defeating Trump and fascism is turnout. More specifically, it's overcoming voter suppression in battleground states. There are way more of us than there are of them, and that's why they are obsessed with making voting as difficult as possible.

this is one of my least favorite tropes and it is especially ridiculous when the heroes have just shot their way through an army of mooks to get to the villain oh, you can kill 475 henchmen but the guy who is actually responsible for ordering them around is a step too far? do you hear yourself?
the whole ‘actually, killing the villain makes us just as bad as him’ trope had done incomprehensible damage to society and i’m not kidding

the whole point is for law professors and lawyers to pretend that the law is a neutral process and not fully contingent on who is holding the hilt it has nothing to do with the law, it has to do with their denial about what they've dedicated their life to

the worst dudes online are the guys who are like “the time for electoral politics is over, it’s time for guillotines.” yeah bud i’m sure you’ll stop posting and get the ball rolling on the guillotines any minute now.

had to gently break it to my mom that her friends who are already planning on moving to Italy may not in fact be escaping fascism to the extent they think they are

Not that anyone particularly cares about original meaning, but think folks should still say it out loud: For all of the things that are unclear in the founding documents and unknowabilities of what the Founders intended, "the President can kill anyone or commit a coup" was *never* legally arguable

the Supreme Court, not content to immunize only Donald Trump from prosecution, retroactively exonerates Richard Nixon for Watergate

people get mad when i say this, but i do in fact place significant blame on rbg for not fucking resigning when she could and should have.
Avatar
few people outside of the ones actually writing these terrible rulings bear more responsibility for our current state of being than RBG and furthermore, while I think she is easily our best active Justice, Sotomayor should resign and be replaced by a 45-year-old in perfect health by November

I'm reading the opinion and it says he enjoys absolute immunity regarding threats to fire the attorney general if they don't do what he wants. So, he could easily just say "investigate or prosecute my friends and you're fired" and he's 100% immune, right?
Avatar
Good point from Sotomayor here. By barring prosecutors from probing a president's intent, Roberts renders the entire "official vs. unofficial" distinction meaningless.
Avatar
the decision lays out - explicitly in the case of the DOJ and implicitly in case of the military - that a president can order the prosecution of or a military strike on anyone he doesn’t like and fire anyone who doesn’t comply until he finds someone who will he may not be prosecuted for this

I really have lost my former tolerance for "we're doomed/fucked/it's all over/they've won" takes at this point, in that they're the most dangerous attitudes one could possibly have when confronted with a truly existential political threat (which we still DO have levers to address).

I don't think Biden has Reagan's '84 approval rating

My version: Joe Biden is the best president of my lifetime, and also he's terrible and old and I hate him
Avatar
Joe Biden is terrible and old and I hate him and I will walk backwards over broken glass and hot coals to vote for a bubbling caudron of aerated sewage instead of fucking Donald Trump
Avatar
You may well be correct. My only point is to put more context around the two issues in which so many online leftists lose their collective minds. We may want Ol' Joe to do xyz on Israel, but to jump on @tft.io 's hobby horse, there are people with very different views.
Avatar
almost the entire “should Biden be replaced on the ticket” conversation is about which choice (him staying or him dropping out for Harris) has the best practical chance to beat Trump in November “how to Not Trump” is the overriding concern

I feel like the main political divide on this website is between “Joe Biden is terrible and old and I hate him” and “Joe Biden is terrible and old and I will crawl over broken glass to vote for a rancid ham sandwich against Donald Trump” very few people are actually huge fans of the guy
