THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

There's dumb shit like dual key, which are just massive waste of space to create the fiction of one unit for bank loan purposes. Like, how does this make sense at all??

I like that the UK seems to have, like, three people with an actual shot at the seat, then another three people who have Bits.
There is a 7 foot tall guy behind Rishi Sunak who likely ran for office just to be able to hold a printed out L behind him during his concession speech.

Judge John Broomes, a Trump appointee, issued a nationwide Title IX rule injunction covering all children of "Moms for Liberty" members this week. That's bad enough, but the procedural/notice mess he made of it is also really absurd: www.lawdork.com/i/146289012/...

When 36% is a landslide, and a 4% increase in vote share gives you 200 more seats (and twice as many as last time), something is fucked with your electoral system. And then the media establishment paints this is _voters_ being volatile. The UK needs proportional representation.

New post up, on how there was never an actual bipartisan push for decarceration. It's true that red and blue states alike saw prison populations decline. But within those red states, the work was done by the blue counties. The politics of punishment are local, not state, not federal.
The Local, Mono-Partisan Nature of Our Current Decarcerationjohnfpfaff.com While state-level data suggests that red and blue states alike saw prisons declines, county-level numbers indicate that this seeming bipartisanship is deceptive. Even in the red states, the declines a...

life under authoritarian regimes is like war: most Americans don’t know that it’s often really normal and boring, up until the rarer, horrible moments when it isn’t
Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.

swing voters and undecided voters basically by definition think about and engage with politics differently than anyone on this site, anyone who writes for the ny times, and the vast majority of the times’ subscribers. otherwise they wouldn’t be undecided/swing voters.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.
I don’t recall the NYT calling for Trump to step down after being convicted of 34 counts of fraud and being called by a judge at his civil trial a rapist in the common person sense

Strongly agree with this. I *loved* one of the earliest examples which was a bunch of dudes competing to draw the most perfect circle.
The "dudes rock" meme is a genuinely blessed addition to gender discourse. We've managed to make our positive model of masculinity something brand new. Overenthusiastic, enterprising, goofy, joyful, carefree, boisterous, camaraderie, all the qualities that we got scolded for in school.

My latest is up now in Slate. It’s an election year where crime is an issue, so essential to raise this issue sooner than later: THE 1994 CRIME BILL DID NOT CAUSE MASS INCARCERATION. It didn’t. It. Just. Did. Not.

What a gorgeous story. It’s not just that this adventurous burro is (to borrow the perfect malapropism our parkour-mad younger child once came up with to describe himself) an “adrenaline donkey”… …it’s that he’s found himself a home amongst others of the same elk.🥹 www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/n...

two things stand out in the court's turn toward "originalism." the first is that it really is demonstrating the extent to which the "clarence thomas is a lightweight" critique is actually true, and the second is it has revealed barrett to be a genuinely interesting justice

All drugs have two names, the generic and the brand, like paracetamol and Panadol. Whenever there's a "grass roots" campaign for drug funding, it's always for a brand, Keytruda not pembrolizumab. This is the difference between saying the govt should fund vacuums and saying they should fund Dysons

Am sure this will get all sorts of dunks for seeming inconsistency, but important to stress what this makes clear. “Back the Blue” backers aren’t (have never) backed police per se. They back authoritarian social control, and see police as way to do that. Police who don’t back that aren’t covered.

14% of ppl in US prisons are there for drugs, over 55% for violence. Only ~10% of ppl in prison are in private prisons; every economic or moral flaw w privates exists in the publics. Prison pops are driven far more by admits than long sentences; almost every long sentence is for murder or rape.
