BAD NEWS: Lee Greenwood saw his shadow. We’re going to have 6 more days of fireworks.

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

I really thought I was cynical enough about the utter corruption of the right-wing bloc on SCOTUS, but it turns out I was still giving them too much respect.
Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

apropos of uhhhhhhh everything, reposting this again
As well-meaning publishers try to navigate the coming storm of state laws against diversity, I hope they'll consider Timothy Snyder's Rule #1 (from his slim book ON TYRANNY).

Glad to see some members of Congress taking the issue seriously.

Over the weekend, one of the major party presidential candidates promoted the idea of trying a former congresswoman for treason with televised military tribunals, and I’ll bet you haven’t seen a news article—much less a catastrophizing op-ed—about it.

Me: "Mr President, I'd like to give you a bribe and commit some treason together." President: "Hold on, lets move this conversation to the Oval Office and bring in some White House aids so we are sure all this gets immunity."
My first read: If a president commits crimes unrelated to him being the most powerful person in the world, he can be prosecuted. But if explicitly uses his powers to commit crimes, he is at least presumptively, and probably absolutely immune from prosecution. I mean, holy shit.

What happens when people with the institutional power to fight evil people don’t fight is those without institutional power despair. You can blame desperate people for the suffering that’s coming their way, if you want, but doing so doesn’t distinguish you from fascists.

A tale of two newspapers, and two very different decisions.

One big sign that Trump will behave like a mad king if he ever gets into the White House is he keeps saying and acting like he will, and the Republicans on the Supreme Court are like, "Do it!" Could be nothing.

Probably one of the most consequential moments for the future of our democracy and the @nytimes.com still does this. Fuck them every way to Sunday.
What the actual fuck, NYT?
Avatar
very much reflective of the lack of any real survival instinct among journalists that they think the big story today is whether biden will step down
“What makes you so confident you should be president?” is an actual question a reporter shouted at the incumbent who just warned about a reckless court decision that imperils democracy

Apparently the only thing a President is not allowed to kill is student loans

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?
Avatar
VERY SERIOUS JUSTICES: The New Deal was unconstitutional and Watergate was constitutional.
For historians, the retrospective legitimation of essentially every criminal act Nixon committed while in office is quite mind-boggling. Ford’s pardon was utterly unnecessary.
Avatar
For decades, Nixon's "If the president does it, it isn't illegal" line was widely and correctly understood to be dangerous nonsense incompatible with democracy and freedom. What the Supreme Court presupposes is: So what?

the Supreme Court is the legal department of the RNC and we owe it no more respect than that
Roberts rules for Trump. Absolute immunity for “official acts.” Vacated and remanded. Party line case. Both Sotomayor and Jackson dissent. Fuck this. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

i cannot get over the basic incoherence of “harris dropped out before voting in 2020 therefore she is definitely unelectable” and then in the same breath saying “this governor who has never run a national campaign would be guaranteed to be more successful”
Tom Nichols has the dumbest possible anti-Harris case 1. Harris is an unremarkable VP (unlike almost all of them except his buddy Dick Cheney) 2. She has low approval from racists 3. A batshit conspiracy theory he made up that people will believe Biden has been Harris’s stalking horse since 2020

Joe Biden has to hurry up and commit fraud, rape, espionage, and insurrection quickly so The New York Times will think he's fit to stay in the race.

Donald Trump spent years encouraging his followers to use violence to his benefit and the New York Times editorial board spent years not calling on him to step down.

Only Democrats are required to serve their country.
In Opinion The greatest public service President Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not run for re-election, the editorial board writes after Thursday's presidential debate.
Opinion | To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Racewww.nytimes.com The president’s inadequate performance in the debate made it clear he is not the man he was four years ago.

Quietly, maybe the shittiest, most despair inducing moment of the debate was Dana Bash asking Biden "Do you support any legal limits on how late a woman should be able to terminate a pregnancy?"

The signal failure of the American media during the modern era has been the refusal to hold Donald Trump accountable for his behavior–and, in particular, his endless lies. That has never been more obvious than it was Thursday night. presswatchers.org/2024/06/cnn-...
CNN fails the nation | Press Watchpresswatchers.org Biden’s performance was inept. But Trump’s incessant lying would have been the other major takeaway from the debate if the moderators had done their jobs.
