I made this into a proper response to the absolutely misplaced calls to "turn down the heat": newrepublic.com/article/1838...
My first thought this morning after I remembered the news was how many people over the last few years have put their bodies between armed far right guys and kids going to the library or a bookstore
Where Were Calls for De-Escalation When Libraries Were Being Targeted?newrepublic.com Trump’s fans seem determined to blame this shooting on their victims.

Opposing assaults on academic freedom is not partisan politics. It’s a defense of public institutions and civil liberties, which enjoy a long history in Western culture, that benefit everyone. 👇👇👇 www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

On a more practical note, since we’re entering a summer surge: US folks, please bookmark Paxcess. If you get covid in 2024 and want a paxlovid prescription, you really wanna sign up for this. It took my (with ACA insurance) out of pocket cost from $300 down to $0. www.paxlovid.com/paxcess

Today my tenure and promotion takes effect. 🎉 Also today my university shuttered its resource centers for women, LGBT, and Black students. The U is closing these even though the state’s new anti-DEI law explicitly says such centers need not close. Shameful.

Prior to October, there was a strong case made in the left circles that I travel in that the Biden admin had achieved the most successful set of left policy victories in our lifetime on everything but the border. Then he made a series of policy choices which understandably overshadowed that.
The fact that Biden has delivered on left-wing policy far better than any president in generations but is widely despised by left-wing voters reflects more poorly on left-wing institutions and voters than on Biden. This is not a movement showing political maturity, and I say that as a left-winger

Do you know any ten-year-olds? Go look at them. They were born before gay Americans could have their marriages federally recognized. Today is the 9th anniversary of Obergefell. It is that new, it is that fragile, and if the Democrats lose power, it could go away in a blink. Please vote accordingly.

An easy way to support your public library is to make use of it—even if only to visit. We keep (anonymized) statistics not only on circulation totals but on attendance & visits and even on patron-staff interactions. Big numbers please trustees and municipal/county administrators. 📚
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

I am Still Mad that nobody has even attempted to codify ventilation recommendations for public spaces during the pandemic. When stuff was reopening, so many places were like "we offer improved air filtration!" but the actual filtration is like, one HEPA filter in a supply closet
It's not just COVID, we could make SUCH A DIFFERENCE if we improved indoor air ventilation. Because it turns out a virus LOVES high CO2. It is still baffling to me how our society managed to turn COVID into personal masking decisions and not BETTER BUILDINGS. www.statnews.com/2024/06/04/c...
A new discovery about carbon dioxide is challenging decades-old ventilation doctrinewww.statnews.com CO2 is a good proxy for how much exhaled — and potentially infectious — air is in a room. New research suggests the more CO2 there is, the more virus-friendly the air becomes.

friends, if you’re wandering in the bookstore or maybe trying libro.com for audiobooks, get anything by c. l. polk! i have read and *adored* five of their books.
Also if you read and enjoyed Witchmark but you never got around to reading the whole trilogy, those are all sales that go straight to my royalty statements. But trilogies with high sell through create opportunities for me.

this point is often brought up to (deservedly) dunk on the Democratic party. but IMO what this actually points to is the political autonomy and increasing lawlessness of policing and police forces in this country - the solution to which is probably not billions more dollars
we have a democratic mayor, a democratic governor, two democratic senators, and a democratic president and the cops are still free to treat protesters like enemy combatants.

Okay - all eyes on UCI. Students at UCI have taken one of the buildings, and it's absolutely nuts the amount of police which have been called out. They're asking for back up from 30 minutes away, and there's at least two helicopters circling the campus.
