obviously this is nonsense, but also the secret service has been in constant crisis for about a decade and the problem has very much not been the women working there
Over on the other site, the usual crew of folks are arguing that DEI meant the Secret Service has been hiring unqualified women and that's why what happened yesterday was possible.

Important to remember that threats of political violence and intimidation does not just affect elected officials. Other public officials - teachers, librarians, judges, election officials, public health officers - are seeing more threats. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-future...

This is NYT’s portrait of a Trump rally, where the explicit agenda was putting millions of people in concentration camps before deporting them.

This photo from Doral Chenoweth/Reuters showing the fairground where Trump was shot at does a remarkable job showing just how small his rallies are this year. This should give you confidence. He’s a shell of the candidate he was 4 or 8 years ago.

Two months ago Greg Abbott pardoned a murderer who texted a friend "I might go to Dallas to shoot looters" then drove into a BLM protest in Austin and killed a protester. The universal response from conservatives to the pardon was "Yeah! Woo-hoo!" Now they say liberals should turn down the rhetoric

A reminder of how Trump responded when a supporter broke into Nancy Pelosi's home and brutally attacked her husband with a hammer:

Nothing rules quite as much as receiving an avalanche of death threats accusing you of inciting political violence - because you incredulously pointed out that Trump v. US seemingly legalizes political violence - and then realizing the people coordinating the smear campaign also organized Jan. 6

My personal feeling is that being shot at does not make you more or less qualified to be President.

Me personally, I’ve been saying for ages now that the second amendment claim that you get to shoot duly elected members of the government because you don’t like them is horrifying, and a recipe for disaster. So I feel zero responsibility here.

3/ "Hi, I'm Donald Trump. I own this hotel. I paid for this party." That was it. He didn't want people to leave without knowing that he was so rich that he owned the hotel and paid for the party. He was so insecure that he had to tell everyone this himself. At Howard Stern's birthday party.

There was a nightclub shooting last night in Birmingham, Alabama with 4 dead and 9 wounded. The fact that this happens *every day* and yet the politicians ignore it unless it's close to home is maddening.

Getting increasingly pissed off by various politicians "distraught" today. This is America, where every day we wonder if this when someone we love gets mowed down by a shooter. Pretending to be shocked just shows you don't get it. Trump has a Secret Service detail to protect him. My kids don't.

What if I told you “investigating it as domestic terrorism” doesn’t mean anything at all, but is a null-phrase calculated to mean “we take this seriously” without being specific, kind of like “person of interest”

"the Biden campaign said it was pausing all messaging to supporters and working to pull down all of its television ads as quickly as possible, the campaign said." I know these people are incompetent jackasses but "let's just let Trump speak unopposed" is borderline deliberate sabotage

The mass deportation scheme is probably the most immediately scary part of Trump 2025. It’s not just the just the forcible deportation of millions of people and accompanying family disruption That’s bad enough. Nor is the let’s-see-what-pulling-this-lever-does-hurr economic recklessness./1
Full quote from ex-ICE director Tom Homan: "Trump comes back in January... I will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen. They ain’t seen shit yet. Wait until 2025.” Tonight in Florida Trump pledged to bring Homan back. Homan, BTW, is a listed Project 2025 contributor.

I'm sure it'll be OK. "Data analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, however, found that ICE wrongly identified at least 2,840 U.S. citizens as potentially eligible for removal between 2002 and 2017. At least 214 were then taken into custody for a period of time." - bit.ly/3xXzyRO
ICE May Have Deported as Many as 70 US Citizens In the Last Five Yearsbit.ly U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) keeps making an inexcusable error: it has been deporting U.S. citizens by mistake.

This is the crazy part of Project 2025. It’s “If I Did It” in future tense. You can literally do citations.

Exactly. More or less his sins were (1) not immediately capitulating and (2) blocking a brigade. This is the attitude of this extremely toxic subset: we are entitled to dictate, we are entitled to your full attention, we are entitled to engagement, we are entitled to obedience.

Project 2025 is not the work of henchmen merely doing their dark lord’s bidding, but an effort that has united much of the American Right’s elite machinery. The people behind Project 2025 are true believers in their extremely reactionary vision for America.
Trump’s rise and Project 2025 are both manifestations of the same underlying radicalization of long-stranding anti-democratic tendencies on the Right. More here - please consider subscribing:
Allies Against Democracy: Trump and Project 2025thomaszimmer.substack.com Trump is not the mastermind behind Project 2025. It’s worse: The rightwing establishment has radicalized to the point where their plans are entirely in line with his vengeful desires

The anger at Jamelle Bouie is because much of what the NYTimes publishes about trans people and related issues is bad, and Bouie wrote a column advocating defense of trans equality and got it published in NYT rather than dramatically quitting the paper instead? Please tell me I’ve missed something.

They haven’t even found that! They find candidates who are running slightly worse than Biden and say “Ah, but they probably don’t have his polling ceiling, so they’d do better, Joe must drop out”
It's cool how we've now set a precedent where if you can find a random polling crosstab that shows some person who isn't running doing 1% better than the winner of the Democratic primary the NYT will demand they drop out every day for six months

I spend a lot of time in the rural northern lower-peninsula of Michigan. Weed is everywhere in those Trump counties. Everywhere. The MI Democratic Party or PACs need to get adds about the GOP banning weed in these communities and in Mcomb and Kent counties.
Plans to ban legal weed and porn might be the sort of thing that gets some less engaged voters and “lol nothing matters” voters to care.

I like how Biden does all the things these people demand of him - give a sharp, unscripted press conference, followed by a fiery campaign rally where he prosecutes the case against Trump - and they just rewrite it into a narrative of failure. Acting like this is a large part of the problem
Yes, he confused Putin and Zelensky and Trump and Harris. He also appeared in MI to give a speech with a teleprompter (without the state’s Democratic Gov or Senators) and then went home to his beach house.
