In this chat, we suggest a distinction between covering something (NYT does great reporting on Trump's autocratic plans), and *crusading.* The latter is wholly different: It uses saturation coverage to alert readers that they should be alarmed. That's just not happening w/r/t Trump's unfitness.
In this pod, we ask you to keep several things in your heads at once:
1) NYT does essential work on Trump threat
2) Biden probably shouldn't run; doubts about his ability to carry this through are too great
3) It's STILL true that NYT is asymmetric on Biden/Trump unfitness
Long elections waste immense amounts of money. they harass potential voters into apathy. They play into the horse-race, scandal-fed view of politics that feeds deeply unserious media coverage. They NOT INCIDENTALLY make it difficult/impossible for campaigns to deal with last-minute surprises.
note how long it took the French from calling the election to holding not 1 but 2 votes? and organizing the shit out of the second one? LESS THAN ONE MONTH
A national election does not have to be a painful 1.5-2 year process! the US election campaign should quite honestly not even have started yet!!
Kathy Hochul bravely defending the rights of New Jersey drivers to kill New Yorkers under their irresponsibly huge trucks for FREE because why come to the city and drink and then take the PATH home when you could just murder people
do we think this guy from New Jersey would have driven his pickup truck to Manhattan to get drunk had there been a $15 congestion pricing fee in place?
"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!
The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared
Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸
have said this before but trump’s brain is pretty obviously far more cooked than biden’s if you listen to what they actually say. but the presentation - basically trump being a spaz - makes trump *look and sound* less cooked to many people i think
Biden v Trump is a pretty direct ageism thing. Trump is aging worse than Biden, but due to vanity and aging in different ways Trump codes as less old and therefore gets way less shit for it.
just like how Mulder stopped the vampire by spilling sunflower seeds, protesters could stop cops by surrounding themselves with wheelchairs, a cop is compelled to push them all over before doing anything else
This is how the police treat disabled protesters.
This is how the police treat disabled unhoused folks, as well.
I've watched BPD snatch away people's canes, I've watched them drag someone out of a wheelchair by their arms, I've watched them throw wheelchairs into trash compactors during sweeps.
basically it feels like the commentariat is composed of children who never seem to consider that politics is made up of many hard decisions and now, confronting the fact that maybe they made the wrong one, are throwing a tantrum and insisting the world instantly manifest their whims.
Trump tells his rally crowd Chuck Schumer has “become a Palestinian.” Second time this week he’s used “Palestinian” to describe non-Palestinians he dislikes as if the word is a slur.
I remain skeptical of the claim that Trump becoming president next year would improve the lives of Palestinians.
Joe Biden has one subpar debate, and the New York Times calls for him to drop out.
Donald Trump got convicted of 34 felonies, and the New York Times said nothing.
OK: if Joe Biden wants to resign and have President Kamala Harris run for reelection, fine, God bless. If you think that version of that plan isn't good enough, then replacing Biden is an unworkable fantasy.
what's a restaurant or bar you miss? i adored Public in NYC the couple of times i went, and Franny's was one of my favorite Brooklyn dinner spots. just realized they both closed 7 years ago, god
Biden in NC today: "I know I'm not a young man. I don't walk as easy as I used to. I don't speak as smoothly as I used to ... [but] I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. I know how to do this job ... I know like millions of Americans know, when you get knocked down you get back up!"
The main thing that concerned me about Biden’s debate performance tonight is that Donald Trump is a convicted felon who tried to overthrow the government
As this debate goes on I’m slowly coming around to the idea that Biden couldn’t win here because there’s just too much bullshit to refute. What Trump’s saying is wholly untethered from reality.
If Biden wins this time, Thomas and Alito will be around 80, so it’s not crazy to think he could get the court to 5-4 liberal himself. If the Dems then win the next presidency too then it’s getting close to a lock
New rule: to comment negatively about immigrants, you have to first disclose why your own family members immigrated to the US seeking a better life, and why people facing much worse shouldn’t have the same opportunity.
