“Why is everyone pretending like we had a normal primary?” — because we…did? The incumbent ran mostly unopposed other than a few fringier candidates? I truly don’t understand what I’m missing here…
For wherever you stand on the whole issue, I will never understand the sudden insistence that even a weak incumbent president has an expected “serious” challenger. I kinda feel like I’m going crazy watching otherwise smart people point out that absence like it’s unusual.

Media, most notably the NY Times, dismisses a strawman: We won’t stop covering news just because it makes a politician you like look bad. The real critique, the one they duck, is about emphasis and tone, signaling what matters. Good listen, with Greg Sargent hosting Will Stancil (offline version):
One thing that's clear from the Biden/age story is this: NYT knows how to crusade when it wants to. And NYT is crusading against Biden's mental unfitness for office in a way it's just not doing with Trump. On the pod, @whstancil.bsky.social and I break this all down: newrepublic.com/article/1835...
Trump’s Wildly Unhinged Attack on NYT Should Wake Up Media: He’s Unfitnewrepublic.com With Trump slamming The Times even as it crusades against Biden, a press critic explains how Trump scams the media into adopting a huge double standard on each man's fitness to serve.

Pro-political murder Republican Mark Robinson may well end up winning with a compliant supermajority in the legislature. His opponent is AG Josh Stein, who has built a record of fighting for reproductive rights and corporate accountability. Help him win:
In a normal campaign, this would have dominated the weekend’s news. I wrote about @gregsargent.bsky.social’s scoop about the Christian nationalist GOP nominee for NC Gov calling for murder of his political enemies: ‘Some folks need killing’: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

People telling me the NYT isn't in the tank for Trump. Then they run this without mentioning that those visits were in regards to Sen Capito's bill. A Republican Senator, mind you, so it's clearly not some Dem cover up.
Breaking News: A Parkinson’s expert visited the White House eight times in eight months from last summer through this spring, according to official visitor logs. The administration has said that President Biden has no signs of the disease.

Again, the best thing Biden can do to fight the "too old to campaign" narrative is to get out & campaign
"biden gets the last half hour of MJ to kinda just shot the shit on MSNBC" is a media strategy required

It's important to note that in France, yes, a fascist majority was prevented, but they still doubled their presence in parliament. The fascists didn't stay home. They went & voted. It's just that enough decent people showed up to beat them back to a significant degree (& make them cry). SHOW UP.

Trump is 78 years old, deeply out of shape, is well known to falsify medical records, spouts unhinged gibberish, and has had a well-documented decrease in verbal ability tracked over decades of TV appearances, and may or may not be shitting himself constantly. Better talk about how Biden is old!

“Generally believed” on the basis of weak evidence. I’m an expert on stigma and discrimination and the root causes are power and structural violence. Ignorance may be a multiplier but it’s not a root cause of stigma including racial animus. Goffman pointed it out in his original book (1963): 1/
It's generally believed that education reduces prejudice. But in some countries, elites and education systems actively foment antisemitism. We test the association between them with a unique global dataset of individual-level survey data measuring antisemitic attitudes and stereotypes.

As well they should. I'm so glad this is getting attention
President Biden and other Democrats are increasingly focusing their attacks on an aggressive right-wing agenda called Project 2025 that is being pushed by allies of presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump — prompting Trump and his team to lash out in recent days at supporters of the effort.

I'll say more about this in my newsletter today but the "tempers flare" narrative on supposed acrimony between Trump and anti-abortion GOPers is not a secret fight that the press has exposed. It's a performance meant to reassure anti-abortion voters that Trump will do what they want.

If the election was held tomorrow, I believe Biden would win Your anxieties are not the Midwest’s problem
Election held tomorrow, he'd have a shot. But not a good one. 1 in 4, being generous. 1 in 6 would be plausible. And worth remembering, Trump overperformed the polls in both 2016 and even more in 2020. If there's a polling error, it could be cutting the other way and Biden's in even worse shape.

Best story I've read on the platform. Reported last week that the platform meeting will be closed to press w no way for non-members to watch - for the first time. Draper adds that committee members names have been kept secret to prevent "outside influence."
Yes, anti-abortion and Christian right activists are mad that their top issue might be sidelined at Trump's demand. Yet look at the RNC platform delegates who remain: www.nytimes.com/2024/07/08/u...

Here's the thing: - IF Biden does not have a disqualifying condition(not old age) - IF Biden is up to campaigning and proving that debate an anomoly. - AND IF he can never prove it to the press... ...then somehow the press has turned a sitting president into an underdog. bsky.app/profile/miss...

Now is the time for SOLIDARITY. If President Biden were going to stand aside, I'd support his successor. He says he won't. There's NO process that can force him to do so. Further attempts to force him to step aside increase the likelihood that Trump wins. I hope Biden knows what he's doing.

Sorry to bring something over from The Bad Place, but the question I keep coming back to is, "Why haven't they found anything on Biden?" Everyone I have talked to says "His Debate was disqualifying, and you are irrational" Okay, where is the follow-up? What about the debate... x.com/jamisonfoser...

look - I'm receptive to both "no, it's gotta be him" arguments and "he's gotta step aside" arguments. not to be wishy-washy but both arguments have merit. "then we do a tourney" is OTOH flatly hilarious. yeah that'll go great. there will much much unity in the wake of the electoral deathmatch
To save democracy, the Democratic party may resort to deploying the greatest concept of all time: a political version of the NBA In-Season Tournament

The thing about Project 2025, too, is that the GOP is signaling, they’re SCREAMING, that it’s a point of weakness. They’re scared as shit that people broadly will see what they’re planning before they’ve taken power to do it.
