By the way, Benjamin Franklin was 81 at the Constitutional Convention and gave one of the best speeches in history — and likely tipped the scales in approving the Constitution.
Yet again, we see the loudest yelps of “1776 BAYBEE!!!” from Christian Patriots who don’t know the first fucking thing about the history of the country over which they claim to have exclusive ownership. 2 out of 8 ain’t bad, I guess.
The opting out is especially wild
Like, Republican governors are being actively presented with money to feed kids and affirmatively saying 'I would like children to starve actually'
(Also, if I'm a Dem campaigner, I'm making some ads and placing some op eds about this immediately)
The governors of a dozen Republican-led states — AL, AK, FL, GA, IA, MS, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, WY — opted out of a new federal food assistance program, leaving about 9.5 million students without the aid this summer
NYT says their performance on Threads today was an aberration, & not indicative of deeper problems they've had with social media. Unfortunately, that hasn't satisfied many observers whose concerns are growing louder.
The stakes are too high. For the good of the news, the Times should step aside
Wow, it's weird how the media narrative of a far right populist wave keeps crashing against reality in every country that actually requires them to win a majority of votes to take power
The 2nd leading pollster projects a similar result—if anything a higher range for the Left coalition.
This wld be a much stronger result than expected for the Macron bloc.
If confirmed, key takeaway: Left & Macronist voters transferred onto each other much more than expected. Clear anti-RN front.
It's almost like there was another dude in the debate who spent the whole time saying insane shit like everybody wanted Roe overturned and J6 was good actually
NEW: Biden has narrowed Trump’s lead in swing states despite a widely panned presidential debate performance, the Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll finds
Every morning I check the news and it's like
-SCOTUS Eliminates Three More Basic Rights, Only Six Remain
-President Mispronounces a Word, Will Now Lose Election to Senile Hitler
-New AI Company Uses Artist Blood to Let Billionaires and Racists Live Forever, Gets $45 Billion Valuation
This should speed up your realization that the ny times comprises people you went to high school with who you didnt think were that interesting or bright if you haven't gotten there yet
I simultaneously feel like Biden should probably not be the Democratic nominee and also that parts of the media seem weirdly gleeful about it in a way that completely ignores the consequences of electing Trump again
"you're not American why do you care about the 4th of July" mate I'm Indian, any day someone got the Brits to fuck off back to their country is a national holiday for me
"you're not American why do you care about the 4th of July" mate I'm Indian, any day someone got the Brits to fuck off back to their country is a national holiday for me
I don’t know how to explain to our nation’s top editorial boards that the Democratic Party is an actual organization with a lot of rules and history to it, not just a store that distributes team jerseys, and it has already selected delegates to its nominating convention.
People are literally too lazy or too devoted to their current narrative to go and watch any of Biden’s speeches or rallies since the debate
It’s kind of jarring
Constitution: People involved in insurrections should not be President.
Roberts court:...hmm, no, I don't see it.
Constitution:....
Roberts court: but the president should have immunity for crimes
this is the thing, all of this “we need confirmation!” is entirely subjective. we have, on one hand, anonymous sources with vague “close to the campaign” or “close to lawmakers” descriptions from political hacks, and then we have actual fucking politicians saying everything’s fun, calm the fuck down
Roy Cooper has now met with Biden twice in five days and there’s no hint of him being discouraged despite a pretty distinct drumbeat of “goddamnit Cal” from him in October 2020
One thing that annoys me about the Democratic consultant class is how they act like they're brass-knuckle streetfighters and yet don't have the stones to run nonstop ads about Trump's extensive connections to Jeffrey Epstein. It's all true! It's documented! There are photos!
Not the most terrifying thing but perhaps the most infuriating: every single thing we said about these fascist Republican fucks has been proved out and all the people who assured us that what is happening would never happen smoothly pivoted to yes it's happening but it will be fine.
All these centrist Let's Have an Emergency Pageant of Democracy takes fall apart at the slightest contact with outside reality, but this part can't even hold up on its own terms!
Anne Applebaum here is arguing that 1. Trump is a senile gibbering idiot so therefore 2. the Democrats must distract the public from paying attention to him
There is also every reason to think that this court will expand Trump v. U.S in his second term to extend immunity to those doing his bidding. I.e., “Our holding in Trump v. U.S. demands that government officials be able to enact the will of the executive without fear of criminal proceedings.”
Keeping Trump out of the White House isn’t the only thing that needs doing and it isn’t enough to solve all problems facing the country & world but if it isn’t done then all those problems get exponentially worse in ways I don’t even know how to express and it scares me when people pretend otherwise
This wasn’t hindsight either. A lot of us argued at the time that they should be expelled. Then Joe Biden didn’t even mention it in his inaugural speech two weeks later. Not expulsion. Not the coup attempt itself. Just…nothing.
Back in late 2020 I advocated for expelling all the members of Congress who voted against certifying, then using the rump majorities you'd gain after to pass court reform (who'd ratify the legality of this maneuver). Radical proposal! but the alternatives of doing nothing were more radical
